Position and Salary

The Attorney General’s Office is recruiting for a permanent full time Paralegal 3 in the Labor and Industries Section of the Christine O. Gregoire Spokane Division. This position is located in Spokane, Washington, and is represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE).

Paralegal 3 Salary Range 59: $67,992 - $91,464

The base pay offered will take into account internal equity and may vary depending on the preferred candidate’s job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

The following stipends may apply based on position requirements:

  • Incumbents assigned to a position designated as requiring dual language skills will receive a 5% Dual Language Requirement Pay stipend.

About the Labor and Industries Division

The Spokane Labor and Industries Section is comprised of 8 attorneys, 4 paralegal 3, 2 paralegal 2s, 4 paralegal 1s and one legal assistant. The Spokane Labor and Industries Section handles a variety of litigation on behalf of the Department of Labor and Industries including litigating workers compensation claims, building trades litigation, fraud cases, wage cases, and Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act violations.

Section attorneys practice in almost every legal forum – from the Board of Industrial Insurance Appeals (BIIA) and Office of Administrative Hearings to state appellate courts.

Duties and Essential Functions of a Paralegal 3

This paralegal position supervises paralegals and professional staff and performs highly complex paraprofessional work which, absent the paralegal, would be performed by an assistant attorney general. This position performs substantive litigation and technical support to the division’s attorneys with a high level of independence, including providing support through all stages of litigation.

Supervisory

Plan, lead, organize, and control the work performed by paralegals and other professional staff. Directs and is responsible for the hiring, evaluation, training, and corrective action of supervised staff, requiring a thorough understanding and implementation of agency policy and procedures. Authority to approve leave and timekeeping for supervised staff. Responsible for staff assignments and workload distribution. Assist in the development of systems and procedures to assure effective and efficient case management and work methods.

Participate as a member of the management team. Is a model and provides leadership to promote teamwork, motivate staff and produce high‑quality services.

Legal Work

Discovery requests and document management. Composes, reviews and prepares responses to formal discovery requests. Identify, locate, collect, organize, analyze, assess and manage documentary, statistical, computer and demonstrative evidence, including records and other information obtained from public and private sources for use in civil litigation.
