Job Description

The School of Dentistry has an outstanding opportunity for the Vice Dean for Finance and Administration to join their team.

About this Opportunity

Reporting to the Dean and working in close partnership with school and central university leadership, the Vice Dean for Finance and Administration, serving as the Chief Finance Officer (CFO) for the School of Dentistry, provides comprehensive oversight of the school’s financial, business, and clinical enterprise operations. This position plays a critical role in advancing the school’s missions in education, research, and patient care by ensuring long-term financial sustainability, operational excellence, and transparent stewardship of resources.

As Vice Dean for Finance and Administration, this position serves as chief counsel to the Dean and executive leadership for business and financial planning and strategic implementation. The Vice Dean leads key units supporting the school including Human Resources, Compliance, Finance and Accounting, Patient Revenue Cycle Operations, Business Development & Process Improvement, and Purchasing & Accounts Payable.

Key Responsibilities Strategic Financial and Business Leadership (30%)
  • Provide strategic business and financial leadership in direct partnership with the Dean, serving as the school’s principal financial and business advisor.
  • Serve as Dean’s Strategic Advisory Council member with executive authority over financial planning and execution.
  • Develop and implement short and long term financial strategies aligned with the school’s strategic plan.
  • Lead multi-year financial planning, forecasting, and scenario modeling.
  • Oversee complex, multi revenue portfolios, including state funds, tuition, clinical and self-sustaining revenue, grants, gifts, endowments, and auxiliary operations.
  • Oversee the finances of a clinical enterprise that is central to both education and access to care missions.
  • Oversee accountability in a public institution environment that requires advanced emphasis on compliance, audit, and public responsibility.
Operational Leadership and Management (40%)
  • Oversee department and major unit processes supporting budget development, resource allocation, revenue generation, and spending.
  • Lead and mentor finance and business operations staff within the school.
  • Foster a culture of service, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Strengthen processes, policies, and systems to support scalability and transparency.
  • Lead professional finance and administrative teams responsible for enterprise level decision and operational support:
  • Human Resources (Director)
  • Finance and Accounting including Workday Finance Shared Environment (Director)
  • Information Technology (Director)
  • Compliance (Director)
  • Business Development & Process Improvement (Analyst)
  • Patient Revenue Cycle Operations and Medical Coding (Director)
  • Central Purchasing and Accounts Payable including Workday Procurement Shared Environment (Director)
Organizational Analysis, Assessment, Troubleshooting, and Reporting (20%)
  • Oversee development and maintenance of financial and human resource metrics supporting budgeting, accounting and reporting including development and maintenance of key performance indicator sites, and reporting to support clinical, educational and business success.
  • Oversee and continuously assess and analyze all activities supported by the annual operating budget of approximately $70 million, including identifying and responding to emerging needs, establishing priorities, and providing reporting tools that support actionable planning and decision-making.
  • Continuously monitor and assess the school’s financial and business performance through interactions with faculty, staff, students and leadership, and monitoring of internal and external data sources.
Other Responsibilities (10%)
  • Serve as the financial and business representative with UW administration, outside agencies and organizations, and the school’s educational accrediting organization.
  • Work with the Assistant Dean for Advancement to define fund raising priorities and spending plans.
