Position: S&T Market Leader I

About the Role

Your role is focused on providing leadership of the S&T market within the Seattle and Portland offices of Cannon Design. You will develop and lead high‑performance diverse teams focused on the development and implementation of the Market Business Plan. The role contributes to the firm’s business development, client engagement, mentoring of our people, and the advancement of work quality. You will integrate our range of design services, manage processes, and deliver solid financial performance for the market while championing Living‑Centered Design and the firm’s purpose: helping people continuously flourish.

Key Responsibilities
  • Market Growth:
    Developing new business opportunities with existing and new client partners to achieve top‑line targets that support a minimum 10% growth of the practice year over year.
  • Client Leadership:
    Leading, engaging and partnering with clients on billable project‑specific work. Advancing innovative solutions that differentiate the firm and foster strong, long‑term client relationships that present future work opportunities.
  • Market Brand Enhancement:
    Acting as a leading voice for the market externally and internally, visible in speaking events, writing and other activities that promote the firm and our work.
  • Practice Support:
    Engaging in activities to advance the firm, the region, the market and your office. Working with and mentoring market team members and recruiting talented candidates to be part of a high‑performing team.
Areas of Focus
  • Market Leadership:
    Responsible for advancing strategic initiatives and client pursuit discussions and strategies. Working with Office and other Market Leadership, lead the development of a market business plan that outlines strategies and actionable items to advance client engagement, differentiation and team building.
  • Top Line Development:
    Working with Client Leaders and firm‑wide resources to focus on growing the market’s top line by identifying and pursuing new target clients as well as nurturing existing client relationships. Supporting the advancement of Living‑Centered Design and targeting a net signed fee goal of $3.0M per year.
  • Client and Team Leadership:
    Leading by example, demonstrating commitment to clients by undertaking work on select client projects, and serving as a client leader or subject‑matter expert as appropriate.
  • Understand the Market:
    Identifying future market trends and opportunities for growth and advancement, including best practices and evidence‑based design.
  • Bottom Line Success:
    Collaborating with Office Practice Leader, Business Practice Leader and Client Leaders to ensure business‑plan initiatives are implemented, achieving a minimum 10% firm profitability level for the market each year.
  • Staff Development:
    Assessing, mentoring, coaching and recruiting staff to build a high‑performance, diverse and inclusive team, and fostering an environment of leadership, integrity and innovation.
Time Commitments
  • 35% of your time devoted to advancing our brand, developing new business opportunities and growing the market.
  • 45% of your time focused on partnering with clients on billable project work and fostering strong client relationships.
  • 10% of your time devoted to market leadership, strategy development, market intelligence, recruiting and staff growth activities.

Targets and performance metrics for this role are subject to change as Cannon Design periodically evaluates our performance metrics.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field required.
  • Current registration/licensure in Architecture, Interior Design or Engineering preferred.
  • Minimum 12 years of experience with a proven track record of strategic growth, market and team leadership, and business‑development success in the S&T market.
  • Additional certifications and/or training relevant to this role preferred.
  • Strong presentation skills essential.
  • Exceptional client and people leadership skills required.
  • Professional acumen and maturity demonstrated by authentic and respectful communication.
  • Strong business acumen and proven ability to create and execute strategy.
  • Ability to inspire, motivate and develop high‑performing, accountable teams.
