Position: Paralegal I - Public Records- Civil Division (Internal Applicants Only)

Job Title

Internal Applicants Only This position is open only to current employees of the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office. Applicants must serve and pass their six-month probation period in their current position in order to be eligible to apply

Job Duties

Receive, interpret and enter new public records requests into the appropriate systems.

Use of multiple sources and systems to assist in collecting responsive records across all divisions of the KCPAO.

Assist in review and red actions of public records requests as directed.

Redact audio and video materials in accordance with applicable laws. Often of extremely graphic footage. Including homicide and child victim cases.

Draft, proofread and edit responsive materials and create appropriate exemption logs.

Receive callers in person and by phone.

Manage physical records for the team. (ordering, scanning, returning etc.)

Schedule and attend meetings, trainings, and provide staff coverage.

Maintain and update the case management system. (Gov QA)

Maintain PDR team statistics to assist with state reporting requirements.

Other responsibilities may be added or changed as business needs evolve.

Actively participate in PAO equity work, attending equity trainings and discussions.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

Familiarity with statutory, regulatory, and other legal requirements associated with the Public Records Act.

Familiarity with existing PAO records retention policies and procedures.

Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Familiarity with criminal legal processes and files a plus.

Ability to work under unusually demanding deadlines.

Working knowledge of general office procedures, equipment and administration.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, Outlook, One Note, One Drive), Adobe Pro, document management software, and internet search engines.

Video and Audio redaction experience is a plus.

Strong communication skills and the ability to receive and follow complex verbal and written instructions and accurately complete tasks with close attention to detail.

Excellent time-management skills to effectively and accurately handle multiple tasks, often with short deadlines.

Ability to use independent judgment, exercise initiative, anticipate needs, and respond appropriately.

Skill in prioritization of work in order to meet team deadlines.

Must be dependable and willing to assist the PDR team as needed.

Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.

Successful experience working and functioning as a team member and independently.

Ability to provide excellent customer service in communications with people of diverse backgrounds, both internal and external, in a tactful, diplomatic, patient, and professional manner.

Ability to demonstrate timely, reliable, and predictable attendance.

Must be able/willing to accept supervision and receive feedback, coaching, and counseling.

This position occasionally requires moving or lifting heavy objects, such as boxes of books, papers, etc. that weigh 20-25 pounds.

Active participation in PAO equity work, attending equity trainings and discussions, support for the PAO's Race, Equity and Social Justice policy and principles, work with PAO colleagues and management to identify opportunities for improvement.

Application Process:

PAO employees who are represented by Teamsters Local No. 117 will receive priority consideration. There exists a broken rung in many organizations that can make attaining formal positions challenging to historically excluded groups. We are not requesting a detailed expression of interest, as we prefer to keep barriers for applying low and will look forward to hearing about experience and aspirations for the role during the interview process.

Selection Process

Per the Collective Bargaining Agreement, qualified bargaining unit members will be invited to participate in a panel interview process.

* Employees with less than 2 years of service will receive.
25 per hour less than the hourly salary table due to a mandatory contribution toward the Teamsters Pension Trust that was voted by members of Teamsters Local No. 117.
