Job Description The UW Office of Sustainability has an outstanding opportunity for a Green Labs Program Manager to join their team.
Key Responsibilities- Program Development and Management (40%) Lead and manage the Green Labs Working Group quarterly meetings. Use participant input and expertise for program strategic planning, development, and implementation. Direct Green Labs Program strategic planning, including development and prioritization of initiatives, program offerings, engagement and partnerships, program budget, analytics and metrics, etc. Develop and manage sub-programs and initiatives, such as freezer preventative maintenance, energy conservation through fume hood sash closing, water conservation, green chemistry, and reduction of material waste.
Initiate, develop, and promote program incentives, such as utility rebates, recognition, and pilot innovation grants for labs to test a new conservation idea. Initiate collaboration with EHS staff and researchers to incorporate sustainability best practices in day to-day operations, develop educational materials, test green lab chemical/reagent alternatives, present in laboratory trainings, seminars, safety meetings, etc. - Stakeholder Engagement & Outreach (30%) Initiate collaboration across multi-stakeholder groups throughout the institution to build partnerships and increase the visibility of Green Labs resources across UW’s schools, divisions, and campuses. Liaise and coordinate between laboratory PIs and managers, UW Recycling, CEUO, EHS and other parts of the institution to scale-up engagement and impact of the Green Labs Program.
- Technical Assistance and Project Management (10%) Manage and coordinate with individual labs and internal units, such as Campus Energy, Utilities and Operations (CEUO), Recycling, Maintenance and Operations, Environmental Health and Safety, and the Industrial Assessment Center on pilot projects and initiatives that advance program goals.
- Analysis of Program and Project Metrics (10%) Measure, track, and analyze Green Lab Program metrics, such as energy and water savings, waste reduction, utility cost savings, lab participation, greenhouse gas emissions reduction, purchasing, etc.
- Budget Management and Grant Funding (5%) Develop and manage the Green Labs Program budget, as well as pilot projects and new initiatives. Apply for internal and external grants to enhance the Green Labs Program, such as funding to test new equipment or products, incentives to increase participation, hire interns, etc.
- Other Duties (5%) Represent UW at select conferences, events, and consortia such as the International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories (i2SL), Big
10 and Friends, AASHE, etc.
Minimum Qualifications
- Applicants who do not meet these qualifications WILL NOT be forwarded to the Hiring Department.
- Bachelor’s degree required in sustainability, environmental science or environmental studies, chemistry, or biology, or related fields
- A minimum of 3 years of experience working in or with research laboratories
- Knowledge of green lab best practices
- Master’s Degree preferred
- Knowledgeable in Green Lab best practice and various methods of certification
- Ability to articulate green lab specific information to university wide stakeholders
- Experience working within laboratory environment, especially lab safety and chemicals
- Experience working with Health and Industrial Hygienists for risk assessments
- Knowledgeable in energy and water conservation in labs and buildings
- Previous higher education experience a plus
- Familiarity with i2SL organization a plus
Must be able to work in a non-smoking environment. Regular and predictable attendance is required.
