Press Apprentice

Job Summary

The Press Apprentice is a support and training role designed to take an entry level worker and bring them to full Journeyman Pressman status. This is a 3‑year program with 6‑month steps in skill and pay. Each 6‑month period includes a review to see if goals have been accomplished. Each period focuses on core abilities to prepare for the next tier of the program.

Responsibilities
  • Set up press for all types of printed product
  • Recognize and correct press problems
  • Set and adjust ink and water balance
  • Set color to proof
  • Set register of four‑color printing
  • Adjust web tensions
  • Set and adjust press rollers
  • Set up and adjust press folders
  • Read and comprehend press work orders
  • Work safely and understand safety procedures involved in the operation of printing presses
  • Press maintenance and cleaning
  • Other related duties as assigned
Minimum Requirements
  • High mechanical aptitude desired
  • Detail oriented, committed, and willing to learn
  • Ability to take written and/or verbal direction
  • Must wear proper safety wear in pressroom, including appropriate hearing protection
  • Team player with a good attitude
Working Conditions

Pressroom – high noise, moving machinery, varying temperatures. Concrete floors.

Physical Demands

Must be able to stand for extended periods, climb stairs & ladders, reach, kneel & stoop, and lift up to 50 lbs. Must have high visual acuity with or without corrective lenses.

Work Schedule
  • Monday through Thursday 5 AM to finish (+/- noon)
  • Friday 1 AM to finish (+/- 8 AM)
  • Typically 30‑40 hours per week; hours may vary to accomplish required tasks, including early morning, late evening, or rarely weekend work. Reliability and reliable transportation are essential.
