SOUTH BAY SANDBLASTING & TANK CLEANING, INC. located in Kent, WA, is a shipyard subcontractor supporting US Navy Ship Repair and Maintenance operations in WA State. We are seeking to hire an experienced Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) Technician to support active ship repair projects throughout the region.

Job Summary

We're seeking an EH&S Technician with a strong commitment to safety and environmental compliance in a maritime ship repair environment.

The ideal candidate will support shipyard operations in Washington State by ensuring full compliance with OSHA Maritime (29 CFR 1915), Washington State L&I, Navy environmental requirements and shipyard specific procedures. This role provides hands on safety oversight, environmental compliance support, hazardous material coordination and required regulatory documentation management for ship repair activities aboard US Navy Vessels.

Must be local to Washington State, we are not looking to relocate candidates at this time.

Responsibilities
  • Provide on site safety and environmental oversight for shipyard operations in support of US Navy Ship Repair projects.
  • Conduct routine inspections to ensure compliance with OSHA Maritime (29 CFR 1915), Washington State L&I, Navy and shipyard requirements. Identify deficiencies, implement corrective actions, and track issues to resolution.
  • Support confined space entry, hot work, fall protection, hazard communication, and general industry safety compliance. Conduct incident investigations and corrective action reporting.
  • Coordinate hazardous material and hazardous waste management, including proper labeling, storage, documentation, and disposal in accordance with regulatory and shipyard regulations.
  • Support environmental compliance activities including spill prevention, pollution control measures, environmental inspections and audit readiness.
  • Assist with product approval and material control processes, including review of Safety Data Sheets (SDS), technical documentation and verification of materials for shipboard use.
  • Provide industrial hygiene and exposure monitoring support as required, including assistance with sampling, ventilation verification, and respirator program documentation.
  • Maintain accurate and organized safety and environmental documentation, including JHAs, permits, inspection reports, training records, waste tracking logs, and compliance records.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned in a fast-paced ship repair environment.
  • Qualifications
    • Minimum two (2) years of EHS experience in Ship Repair, Maritime, or Industrial environments
    • Experience working at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Naval Station Everett, or other WA Naval facilities preferred
    • Strong knowledge of OSHA Maritime Standards (29 CFR 1915)
    • Familiarity with Washington L&I regulations
    • Experience supporting environmental compliance documentation
    • Ability to work in confined spaces and industrial environments
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills
    • Proficient in Microsoft applications
    • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
    • Ability to manage time effectively with minimal supervision
    Education Requirements
    • High school diploma or GED, B.A., Technical/Vocational trade school, or apprenticeship
    • Must be certified HAZWOPER and 10-hour OSHA Maritime Safety
    Additional certifications preferred
    • Confined Space Entry
    • Fall Protection
    Working Conditions and Physical Demands

    Work is conducted indoors and outdoors frequently exposed to prevailing weather conditions. Work indoor or aboard vessel which may have fumes, chemicals, and heat as well as noise and dust present depending upon the location of work. Safety equipment required.
