Stewards Individual Placements (Stewards), a program of Conservation Legacy, provides individuals with Ameri Corps service and career internship opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants serve with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits to provide institutional capacity, develop community relationships, and support ecosystem health. Stewards in partnership with the NPS GIS office is hosting a cohort of GIS stewards.

In addition to protecting and managing America’s national park sites, the National Park Service (NPS) also operates programs that extend throughout the nation to connect all Americans to their parks, trails, rivers, and other special places. The Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance (RTCA) program helps community groups, nonprofits, state and local governments, and tribes plan parks and trails, conserve and improve access to rivers and natural areas, and create recreation opportunities through locally‑led partnerships.

This GIS Support Steward will provide technical GIS assistance for a variety of RTCA community projects and national program needs. The Steward will gain hands‑on experience in producing maps, integrating data, and other GIS support functions while contributing to projects that enhance conservation and recreation across the country.

The GIS Steward will provide maps, outreach tools, and support for community projects supported by RTCA. This may include static maps for reports, ArcGIS Story Maps, interactive map products that can be used in public outreach settings, GPS and integration of field data into mapping exercises, community engagement and outreach using GIS tools, and other technical support. The GIS Steward will compile data from GIS databases, create geospatial datasets, and develop maps for other NPS partnership and civic engagement programs such as hydropower and wild and scenic rivers.

The GIS Steward may also conduct spatial analysis to inform decision‑making and assess program impact, perform data quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) to ensure accuracy and consistency of spatial data, support web mapping applications and dashboards, and assist with national program GIS initiatives. Collaboration with staff and partners will occur across multiple offices and time zones using remote communication tools to coordinate tasks and share updates.

• United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
• Applicants must be between ages of 18-30 years old, or up to 35 for veteran, based on Public Land Corps Act of 1993 authorizing this Ameri Corps opportunity.
• Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an Ameri Corps participant, and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award
• Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.

Ideal candidates will possess a solid foundation in GIS principles, skills, and data management practices and be able to demonstrate proficiency in producing well‑designed cartographic products and using the current suite of Esri ArcGIS software and tools. This position requires strong organizational, teamwork, and communication skills, including technical writing and presenting. Candidates must be self‑motivated and comfortable reaching out to coworkers or technical specialists as needed and working independently after an initial training period.
