Brief Position

Description:

The Housing Advocacy and Community Engagement Coordinator expands the reach and scope of the Low Income Housing Institute by advocating for innovative solutions and strategies to address homelessness in the Seattle area through community and civic engagement. The Coordinator collaborates with partner organizations and community groups to sustain and grow our Tiny House Villages, communicates the mission and impact of our shelters and permanent supportive housing through digital and physical media, and supports the civic engagement of clients and residents.

By building strong relationships with local stakeholders and policymakers, the Coordinator helps amplify the voices of those experiencing homelessness and ensures their needs are represented in broader discussions on housing justice and policy.

Day in Life of JV

A day in the life of the JV is as follows: once you arrive via foot or bus (the office is very accessible by both) the day begins with checking your LIHI email, filled with questions and concerns from staff, partners, and community members. The day could unfold in a variety of settings-an office, an event, city hall or on-site visits, and often, it’s a blend of all four, offering you a chance to immerse yourself in the diverse fabric of Seattle's communities and neighborhoods.
Most often a day is office-based and you will begin by diving into administrative tasks, which could include rescheduling upcoming Tiny House Village Community Advisory Committee(CAC) meetings, drafting agendas, and ensuring meeting minutes are filed regularly, draft emails or public comment. A portion of the morning might be spent writing up talking points and identifying new speakers for city or county public comment, ensuring that the messaging is clear and impactful.

In addition, you’ll create and edit communication documents and schedule social media posts to keep the community informed about developments, needs, and upcoming events.
On a day when you are on site, you will take on a more hands-on approach. You may start your morning by walking through a neighborhood near a developing Tiny House Village, meeting local residents, and hearing their thoughts on issues that directly affect them. Other tasks include distributing voter registration and petition information to clients and case managers, encouraging our clients to be civically engaged.

You may also schedule and shadow tours of shelters and permanent supportive housing, guiding prospective partners through the spaces where change is happening, and showing them firsthand how LIHI’s programs are transforming lives.
