including a range of short and long-term programs that include residential options at our Vancouver campus, outreach services in local schools and communities, access to specialized technology and resources through our Ogden Resource Center, as well as training options for parents, educators, and related service providers through a combination of department efforts. The Washington State School for the Blind (WSSB) currently has an On-Call Registered Nurse 1 position open. Employees who are placed on our on-call list are only called when a permanent nurse requires coverage for a shift due to illness, training, military duty, etc. Availability when called upon to work in these situations is important and there is no guarantee of hours.
Under the supervision of the Nursing Supervisor, this position provides nursing care for the residential and day students at WSSB and occasionally off campus within the scope of the nursing care plan including, but not limited to:
- Administering medications and treatments;
- Providing first aid;
- Conduct basic physical assessments;
- Collaborate with physicians, medical offices, parents, etc., as needed;
- Emphasis on exercising nursing judgment, knowing when to give or not give medication, know when concerns warrant a call to the physician, and knowing which healthcare concerns are priority and which need direct (or emergent) follow-up;
- May be required to assist/teach students how to care for their own medical needs independently, in both formal and informal settings. Assist/train students to self-manage their own medications, including a training period where they learn about their medications, side effects, and proper medication administration;
- Responsible for care that follows all regulatory policies and procedures, and state and federal regulations;
- Provide nursing services during off campus student outings, during summer camp and outdoor camp;
- Ability to wear proper PPE
- Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing;
- A valid license to practice as a registered professional nurse in WA with ability to obtain or state nursing license;
- Good written and verbal communication skills;
- Current First-Aid, CPR/AED certification for Health Care Providers;
- Some flexibility in scheduling and willingness to work typically Sunday through Friday (day and/or swing shifts);
- Professional nursing experience;
- Experience working with children and families of blind and low vision children;
- School nursing experience in a K-12 environment;
The Health Center is open Monday-Thursday 6am-8:30pm, Friday 6a-noon, and Sunday 4pm-10pm (later at times if waiting for students to arrive from busses). On rare occasions, a nurse may need to stay later to wait for a parent to arrive for an ill student, or in rare cases, overnight to provide care for a sick student with a condition that requires nursing expertise.
Note: The full salary range has been posted for informational purposes only. New hires without State of Washington agency experience in a similarly situated position typically do not start at the top of the range as these are considered senior/longevity steps. Education/experience and skills and abilities will be considered for the proper placement of any final candidate. This recruitment can be used to fill multiple positions and shifts.
On-Call staff are not eligible for the benefits listed in the Benefits tab of Neogov. However, on-call staff are eligible for the Employee Assistance Program (EAP). On-Call staff are also eligible to accrue vacation on a pro rata basis in accordance with WAC . Holidays are paid in accordance with WAC .
