Responsibilities
The Pre-Operative Registered Nurse (Pre-Op RN) is responsible for providing comprehensive nursing care to patients prior to surgical or procedural interventions. The Pre-Op RN performs patient assessments, prepares patients for surgery, collaborates with the surgical and anesthesia teams, and ensures patients are medically and emotionally prepared for procedures while maintaining patient safety and quality standards.
- Conduct comprehensive preoperative patient assessments, including medical history, medication review, allergies, and vital signs.
- Verify surgical consent forms, physician orders, and required documentation.
- Prepare patients physically and emotionally for surgical procedures.
- Initiate IV access and administer medications as ordered.
- Ensure completion of required preoperative testing and laboratory results.
- Educate patients and families regarding surgical procedures, postoperative expectations, and discharge instructions.
- Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesia providers, and perioperative staff to coordinate patient care.
- Maintain accurate and timely patient documentation within the electronic medical record.
- Monitor patient condition and report changes to appropriate providers.
- Adhere to infection prevention, patient safety, and regulatory compliance standards.
- Assist with patient transport and positioning as needed.
- Support efficient patient flow and surgical schedule coordination.

- Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing
- DC RN License required
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
- Minimum of 2 years of acute care, surgical, or perioperative nursing experience preferred
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred
