Overview
Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit organization that provides adult cancer treatment and conducts research focused on cancer and infectious diseases. Based in Seattle, Fred Hutch is the only National Cancer Institute‑designated cancer center in Washington. The center operates eight clinical care sites that offer medical oncology, infusion, radiation, proton therapy, and related services.
Job SummaryRegistered Nurse, 0.6 FTE (24 hours/week). Provides patient‑centric care, primarily responsible for nursing assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation as part of an interdisciplinary care team.
Responsibilities- Assess physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs and evaluate patients’ adaptation to health changes.
- Develop a plan of care based on the patient’s disease, symptoms, and response to treatment.
- Educate patients, families, and caregivers on disease processes, treatment, side effects, and symptom management.
- Coordinate with the interdisciplinary team to ensure continuity of care.
- Refer patients, families, and caregivers to other clinical resources/professionals such as social work, home health care, and clinical nutrition.
- Implement, evaluate, and modify the plan of care.
- Integrate research and evidence‑based knowledge into clinical practice.
- Educate patients and families about rehabilitation services.
- Provide telephone and email symptom triage.
- Engage in meaningful patient follow‑up and care coordination (e.g., post‑procedure, medication side effects).
- Conduct new patient orientation to the service line.
- Offer caregiver support.
- Assist with in‑clinic procedures (setup, consent, timeout, and patient positioning).
- Assess needs for additional supportive care resources.
- Administer prescription refills and address medication questions.
- Review results.
- Supportive care referrals.
- Prepare FMLA paperwork, disability paperwork, and Ferry passes.
- Coordinate outside clinical care and ensure continuity of care with outside providers.
- Collaborate with the research team for patients on trial.
- Place physiatry return orders and supportive care referral orders as directed by an MD.
- Respond to patient inquiries via MyChart and phone.
- Coordinate lab tests and notify patients.
- Coordinate with supportive care and medical care teams across Fred Hutch sites.
- Facilitate external referrals for ongoing rehabilitation needs.
- Manage Epic Rehab Medicine Clinical Support InBasket inquiries from patients, staff, or other providers.
- Attend regular team meetings with providers and nursing teams.
- Coordinate care with ancillary services.
- Delegate tasks to appropriate team members.
- Coordinate patient schedules with the clinic team.
- Collaborate with infusion RNs and other care team members to ensure patient needs are met.
- Provide real‑time management and escalation of issues in the clinic.
- Document all nursing care activities accurately and in a timely fashion.
- Demonstrate knowledge of patient privacy rights.
- Participate actively in continuing education, departmental projects, and committees.
- Graduate from an accredited school of nursing.
- Hold a current Washington State Registered Nurse (RN) license or a current NLC multistate license (MSL); must upgrade to an MSL with primary state of residence, WA, within 60 days of hire (waiver possible under specific circumstances).
- Ability to develop clinical judgment and apply critical thinking skills.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) AHA Health Provider Card (or equivalent) with renewal required every two years.
- Additional certification may be required depending on the department.
- Time‑management skills – ability to organize and manage time and tasks independently.
- Effective communication skills: listening, asking open‑ended questions, clarifying responses, and providing information clearly without jargon.
- BSN‑prepared nurse.
- OCN (Oncology Certified Nurse) or BMT RN certification.
- At least 2 years of oncology nursing experience.
- Previous telephone triage experience.
