The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is seeking a Wildland Fire Management Supervisor for the Straits Unit in the Olympic Region. This role focuses on hazard‑risk mitigation, interagency collaboration, and leadership during fire season. The position may be filled as an in‑training role within an 18‑24 month training plan (extendable to 36 months). Candidates may be designated as Wildland Fire Management Lead (WFML) In‑Training or Wildland Fire Management Supervisor (WFMSup) based on qualifications.
Responsibilities- Provide leadership and oversight of the fire program in Clallam and Jefferson Counties, hiring, training, and daily leadership of 1 engine module leader and 3 firefighters.
- Assist with regulation and prevention efforts: public speaking on fire prevention, posting and maintaining fire danger signs and kiosks, industrial fire tool inspections, and burn permitting.
- Coordinate Forest Resilience activities such as prescribed fire support, fuels treatments, and site visits for landowners.
- During the summer serve as an engine boss on one of the engines, supervising up to four employees during Wildland Fire Operations in the region, state, and nationally.
- Must pass the NWCG work capacity test annually at the arduous level.
- Job requires strenuous outdoor work in all weather conditions across rugged terrain. Ability to traverse uneven, mountainous, rocky, loose, or muddy ground, thick vegetation, down/standing trees, wet leaves/grass, varied climates, high altitudes, heights, holes, drop offs, rough roads, open bodies of water, and isolated/remote sites; may involve close quarters and limited sleep.
- Position assigned a government vehicle with significant driving and field visits; must adhere to DNR 2‑to‑1 work‑rest ratio and 16‑hour workday policy.
- Current valid driver’s license with two years of driving experience; state drivers must have an unrestricted license.
- Finalists will provide driving records for all states held in the past three years.
- NWCG Qualification of Firefighter Type 1 (FFT1).

- Two years’ experience in wildland fire management, natural resources, forestry, or related field OR equivalent education/experience.
- Experience leading wildland firefighting personnel.
- NWCG qualified Incident Commander Type 5 (ICT5).
- Associate’s degree or higher with professional experience in a natural resource field.
- Knowledge of employment rules and regulations for permanent, seasonal, and career seasonal employees.
- Experience in forest fire protection regulatory programs.
- Experience with computer applications such as Microsoft Office Suite, Word, and PowerPoint.
