Position: WCC Crew Supervisor 1 - Southwest

Overview

The Department of Ecology is hiring Washington Conservation Corps (WCC) Crew Supervisor 1 positions for the Southwest region, which includes Clark, Pierce and Thurston counties. The position is a project-based role funded until June 30, 2027, and requires employees to work in the field 40 hours per week in person.

Duties

As a Crew Supervisor, you will supervise and mentor a crew of five WCC members in the performance of natural resource assignments. Projects may include:

  • Habitat Enhancement: riparian restoration, noxious weed control, in-stream salmon recovery work, etc.
  • Recreational Enhancement: campground upgrades and maintenance, trail construction and maintenance, boardwalk installation, etc.
  • Spike projects: travel around Washington for restoration and recreation projects (25-75% of project time).
  • Disaster response: lead crew deployments to local and national disasters.

What you will do:

  • Support and guide crew members in developing and pursuing career and education objectives and ensuring safety, well-being, and inclusion of all crew members.
  • Recruit, interview, and select new crew members; review, plan, and assign work tasks.
  • Evaluate crew member performance, provide clear feedback, document performance issues, and recommend disciplinary action.
  • Track and complete conservation projects, monitor material and equipment usage, communicate progress with sponsors and WCC staff, and assign tasks.
  • Complete and submit necessary paperwork: timesheets, travel logs, safety reports, production reports, administrative and hiring forms, and member evaluations.
  • Ensure equipment is safely used and maintained; drive and maintain state-owned or leased vehicles, usually four-wheel drive pickups.
  • Work in inclement weather, rough terrain, and wilderness areas; walk several miles per day; lift up to 60 pounds repetitively; may require overnight travel and up to 8 consecutive travel days; be ready for disaster deployment up to 30 consecutive days.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Three years of experience equivalent to WCC field work, young adult mentorship, or leadership (e.g., outdoor leadership, crew lead, coordinating field activities).
  • OR a satisfactory completion of a two-year Forest Technology Vocational Program and one year of field experience as a WCC crew member or work that includes emergency response, hazardous spills, firefighting, or habitat restoration.
  • OR an Associate's degree in Environmental Science or Studies, Forestry, or closely related field, and one year of field experience as a WCC crew member or work that includes emergency response, hazardous spills, firefighting, or habitat restoration.
  • Qualifying military experience can substitute, year for year, for field experience.

Desired

Qualifications:

  • Experience in supervising and training employees and natural resource conservation and maintenance work, and using hand and power tools.
  • Field skill certifications such as Wilderness First Aid Certification, Pesticide Operators License, Wildland Firefighter Red Card.
  • FEMA Disaster Response Training, e.g., Intermediate Incident Command System (ICS 300), and Introduction to NIMS (IS-700).

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Background check including criminal record history will be conducted prior to new hire; results may be considered in determining suitability for the position.
