Animal

Technician III

The Animal Technician III performs routine animal husbandry, custodial care for the animal areas, and processes equipment. In addition, the Animal Technician III performs specialized skilled animal husbandry functions, preforms tasks in support of specialized programs, projects, or administrative duties requiring an advance level of technical and/or mechanical skill and knowledge. The incumbent works under the Animal Technician Lead following established procedures in performing daily responsibilities.

The Technician III position reports directly to the Animal Husbandry Manager. This position is under supervision with no responsibility for supervision others. Incumbent is expected to acquire skills and knowledge to perform more advanced work through training. Uses discretion and judgement in carrying out tasks.

NOTE:

The Animal Technician III is classified as essential personnel and, as such, is required to work with a minimal number of absences and during all Center closures except in the event of a major disaster when access to animal housing and use facilities is prohibited by governmental emergency personnel.

Responsibilities
  • Mastery of all Animal Technician II essential tasks. May assist in training new and lower-level technicians. (40%)
  • Husbandry Operations:
    Become proficient at packing/ unpacking of animals for transport, injection, and collection procedures. (20%)
  • Administrative Operations:
    Become proficient in assigned administrative procedures in support of animal facility management and operations, including software functions, data collection, record keeping. (20%)
  • Maintenance and Sanitation Operations:
    Become proficient at routine equipment maintenance, collection of environmental samples for sanitization efficacy. (5%)
  • Researcher Support:
    Become proficient at colony management, colony record keeping, and sample collection. (10%)
  • Perform other duties as assigned. (5%)
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three full years of experience as an Animal Technician II or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated understanding of federal, national, and institutional animal welfare regulations, policies, guidelines, and SOPs.
  • Good computer skills.
  • Good verbal and written English communication skills. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to prepare written reports.
  • Ability to lift and move 50 lbs on a regular basis and sustained physical activities such as bending, balancing, stooping, reaching, and remain standing for long periods of time.
  • Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment including scrubs, gloves, shoe covers, gowns, ear plugs / muffs, and eye protection.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Four years experience in animal husbandry or related field.
