At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!
This role is part of Blue Origin Operations, which is comprised of Integrated Supply Chain, Test Operations, Safety, Quality, and Mission Assurance. This includes Manufacturing and Supply Chain support across all Blue Origin facilities.
As part of a hardworking team of specialists, inspectors, and engineers, you will develop and execute quality processes for the design, test, and manufacture of valve assemblies used in rocket propulsion systems. Our team is responsible for implementing quality initiatives that support development and production of flight-critical hardware. This position requires a passion for solving complex problems and delivering operable solutions;
the ability to act with minimal direction and take ownership; and the adaptability to thrive across a variety of applications and systems.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Establish, implement, maintain, and enforce quality system processes that support valve assembly products in both development and production environments
- Serve as the Quality Assurance subject matter expert for valve assembly operations, providing hands-on support to inspection, manufacturing, and test teams
- Review and approve manufacturing build documents including work orders, assembly travelers, and nonconformance records specific to valve assembly hardware
- Perform First Article Inspection (FAI) planning and execution in accordance with AS9102 for valve assembly components and subassemblies
- Interpret and apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) per ASME Y14.5 to support inspection planning and nonconformance disposition
- Evaluate and disposition nonconforming material through the Material Review Board (MRB) process, driving root cause analysis and corrective action
- Integrate quality system applications between engineering, manufacturing, and operations to ensure consistent use of quality best practices and timely communication of quality issues
- Measure, analyze, and improve quality system performance consistent with organizational quality goals for valve assembly production
- Perform periodic audits of quality system application in accordance with AS9100
- Participate in engineering design reviews and provide recommendations to improve the quality, reliability, and manufacturability of valve assembly designs
- Collaborate with internal and external customers on quality-related concerns, including supplier quality issues affecting valve components
- Recommend and lead initiatives and/or process changes that will improve product and system quality
- Develop and present training materials to build quality awareness across manufacturing and assembly teams
Minimum Qualifications:
- Minimum of a B.S. in Engineering, Science, or equivalent; or American Society for Quality (ASQ) Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) certification
- 3+ years of proven experience in an engineering field, with at least 2 years in a quality engineering role
- Quality Assurance experience in a production environment; aerospace, space launch, military, or commercial aviation preferred
- Demonstrated experience with valve assembly, fluid systems, or precision mechanical assembly quality processes
- Proficiency in interpreting engineering drawings and applying GD&T per ASME Y14.5
- Familiarity with AS9100 or ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems and related quality programs
- Experience with nonconformance management and root cause/corrective action (RCCA) methodologies
Preferred Qualifications:
- Quality Assurance experience in a rocket engine or propulsion valve assembly production environment
- Experience performing or leading First Article Inspections (FAI) per AS9102
- Proven experience transitioning hardware from development through production to flight operations
- Quality Management System audit experience (internal or supplier)
- Familiarity with leak testing, proof pressure testing, and functional acceptance testing of valve assemblies
- Quality performance measurement and data analysis capabilities (SPC, control charts, yield metrics)
- Six Sigma Green Belt, Black Belt, or comparable continuous improvement certification
- Experience with supplier quality management and source inspection activities
