Job Description
A full-time research technologist position is available in the Adams Waldorf lab at the University of Washington. The lab focuses on infectious disease, immunology, and nonhuman primate models to dissect the cellular and molecular mechanisms of pregnancy complications, including preterm birth, miscarriage, and fetal injury. The candidate will carry out the research work under the supervision of Dr. Kristina Adams Waldorf within the Center for Reproductive Sciences at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at South Lake Union, and within the Washington National Primate Research Center.
The job responsibility includes performing laboratory investigative work in support of studies in the lab. The candidate should have some experience working with cell/tissue culture and molecular bench work including, DNA and RNA isolations, PCR reactions, and ELISA assays. The successful candidate also needs to be interested in learning the imaging analyzing skill and analysis of immunohistochemistry. The successful candidate will also be responsible for coordinating nonhuman primate experiments and performing sample collections and processing.
The successful candidate will also assist Dr. Adams Waldorf with mentoring new trainees.
This position will be located at the South Lake Union campus of UW Medicine, a hub for scientific activity at the University of Washington. The candidate needs to show strong enthusiasm for their work; will be detail-oriented, reliable, and highly organized; possesses a high degree of accountability for the quality of work performed; can work independently after a reasonable amount of training;
has excellent technical skills.
Experimental duties (50%)
- Coordination of nonhuman primate experiments: coordination of multiple teams (pathology, primate center, flow cytometry, single cell dissociation teams) to ensure there will be sufficient support on experiment dates
- Sample processing – plasma/sera/PBMC isolation, tissue homogenization, single cell dissociation
- Biochemistry and molecular biology – RNA and DNA extraction, qPCR, electrophoresis, immunoblotting
- Immunology – ELISA assays
- Computing and analysis –Powerpoint, Excel, Word, RStudio, Lab Wiki
Lab duties and coordination of experiments (50%)
- Mentor new research trainees and undergraduates; contribute to improvements in efficiency
- Orient/train new staff
- Manage projects of moderate size and scope
- Inventory management for reagents/orders/cells; track expenses
- Laboratory Safety – onboard new personnel with lab safety SOPs, maintain the chemical list in the laboratory online, maintain laboratory safety practices, ensure compliance with lab regulations and completion of corresponding paperwork
- Place orders, obtain quotes for the lab
- Documentation – daily record of work performed in Slack
- Development and updating of laboratory SOPs
Two years experience as a Laboratory Technician II, or equivalent; OR a Bachelors Degree in an appropriate field of science or technology.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Desired QualificationsBachelor’s degree in biology, animal science, bioengineering, or related field and at least half a year of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
