Postdoctoral Scholar in advanced ultrasound methods for both cardiovascular imaging and cardiac ablation Position Overview

Organization: Applied Physics Lab

Title: Postdoctoral Scholar in advanced ultrasound methods for both cardiovascular imaging and cardiac ablation

Position Description

The Applied Physics Laboratory at the University of Washington (APL-UW) invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher to be deeply embedded in a research group that utilizes advanced ultrasound methods for both cardiovascular imaging as well as cardiac ablation (using high-intensity thermal ultrasound). The position will be primary responsible for fabrication, characterization (both electrical and acoustic) and pre-clinical implementation (as part of a team performing both ex-vivo and large animal in-vivo studies) of catheter-based cardiac/myocardial ablation.

The clinical applications investigated will include ventricular tachycardia and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy septal reduction therapy. Opportunities will be available to interface with and participate in research projects in partner laboratories within the Center for Industrial and Medical Ultrasound.

Core Duties:

  • Apply advanced engineering techniques to rapidly fabricate intracardiac ultrasound ablation catheters, ensuring consistency to allow comparisons of use in large-animal scientific studies.
  • Characterize and validate fabricated devices acoustically and electronically
  • Participate in animal research by operating experimental ultrasound devices

In addition to disseminating results at major conferences and in peer-reviewed journals, postdocs are encouraged and mentored in writing grant proposals. A notable feature of APL postdoc positions is the ability to submit grant proposals as PIs under supervision, with the goal of establishing an independent research program and career path.

The postdoc will be based at the University of Washington – Seattle Campus. The preferred start date is June 1 or July 1, 2024, and has funding available for 2 years.

Salary range:
Commensurate with qualifications and experience. See current salary scale for Postdoctoral titles at (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below).-contract

The base salary for this Postdoctoral Scholar position will be $5,900 - $6,100 per month ($70,800 – $73,200) per year, commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.

Qualifications

The position is open to capable doctoral recipients in research fields including engineering and other related fields.

Candidates must have experience with transducer and catheter fabrication from raw materials including soldering, irrigation, air-backing, sealing, and epoxy. Electronic and acoustic ultrasound characterization knowledge a must. Candidates will need programming skills in MATLAB and CAD software skills. The ability to communicate scientific results to both broad and expert audiences, orally and in writing, is indispensable to this position.

University of Washington postdoctoral scholar appointments are for a temporary, defined period not to exceed five years/60 months, including any previous postdoctoral experiences.
