Under the direction of Dr. Johnnie Orozco, Fred Hutch operates intensive summer internship programs for high school and early undergraduate students. During the academic year, we collaborate with Hutch Science Education to facilitate hands‑on research experiences for groups visiting our campus. We are seeking a Research Technician I/II to aid with the year‑round operation of these efforts aimed at introducing students to biomedical research and enabling young people to succeed in their academic and professional pursuits.

The ideal candidate will have experience with cellular and molecular biology techniques and a strong desire to engage in education and outreach activities.

Responsibilities
  • Guide visiting students and summer interns through chemistry, biochemistry, molecular and cellular biology activities in laboratory.
  • Acquire and maintain reagents, supplies, and equipment for cellular and molecular biology lab procedures.
  • Perform and modify documented protocols and assays.
  • Ensure safety and adherence to EH&S and other relevant guidelines.
  • Assist in coordinating logistics and scheduling for programming, including preparing materials and reagents for workshops and hands‑on laboratory activities.
  • Assist in developing and revising program activities and lessons.
  • Assist in the selection of applicants for internship positions.
  • Support summer interns and alumni by creating and nurturing a sense of belonging, and bolstering their confidence to pursue their academic goals.
  • Participate in relevant science and education groups at Fred Hutch.
  • Assist in the administration and evaluation of the internship and academic‑year programs.
  • Complete other program‑related and laboratory duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Research Technician I
  • Bachelor’s degree in related scientific field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated scientific knowledge in the area of study.
  • Demonstrated basic laboratory skills.
Research Technician II
  • All minimum qualifications of Research Technician I, plus:
  • 2 years of experience working in a lab outside of school coursework.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Independent research experience outside of school coursework.
  • Experience with science education programs and/or teaching.
  • Basic familiarity with database management.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Forms, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Proficiency and comfort with math skills used in everyday research laboratory scenarios.
  • Able to work evenings and weekends several times a year for special events in the lab.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including verbal and written communication skills.
