Position: Lab Aide - Work Study
Overview

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit organization providing adult cancer treatment and groundbreaking research focused on cancer and infectious diseases. Based in Seattle, Fred Hutch is the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in Washington.

At the Sinnott-Armstrong Lab, we are interested in common human diseases and patient experience to pursue transformative advancements in healthcare through equitable artificial intelligence integration and innovative research methods. We are dedicated to understanding the map between our genotype and our phenotype at a population level. We aim to use the diagnosis and management of Lyme disease, chronic illnesses, and precision medicine for transgender and intersectional communities as models to understand the public health landscape as we move forward.

We focus on critical areas of public health (ie. environmental health, biostatistics, epidemiology) and prioritize collaborative research projects across institutions, to redefine biomedical research into a multifaceted practice. The approach we take is to utilize innovative phenotype-genotype mapping, including Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS), and database analysis of patient records. We also take a biochemical and molecular approach to understand the immune response and mechanisms of the Lyme disease-causing Borrelia burgdorferi.

Our research aims to improve health outcomes and access by prioritizing patient experiences and fostering innovative, inclusive practices.

This is a work-study opening. Work-study is a college / university program that enables part-time jobs for undergraduate and graduate students with financial need, affording them assistance with educational expenses. Applicants eligible to apply need to have the following:

* Currently on or will be eligible for off-campus work-study during the upcoming academic school year.

You will be required to submit Financial Aid documentation confirming work study eligibility for off-campus work prior to interview

Responsibilities

Work on Liquid Handling Robotic Project, which includes but is not limited to:

* Robot construction and maintenance using cost-effective materials.

* 3D print parts and models for robot.

* Build fluidics system for liquid distribution.

* Utilize open-source materials and software to build up platform.

* Record and maintain both physical and online logs of progress on project.

* Clean and organize labware and consumables to maintain the lab space.

* A minimum commitment is expected; however, reasonable flexibility will be provided for vacations and personal time.

* Clear and consistent communication regarding availability and responsibilities is expected.

* Training will be provided for all laboratory techniques and protocols.

* Prepare presentations and regular updates to share with rest of lab and administration.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

* High School diploma or equivalent with an interest in the sciences.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

* Currently enrolled in college.

* Previous or current laboratory experience is preferred.

* Accuracy and attention to detail, clear communication and dependability are essential.
