Job Description & How to Apply Below
Position: Job Opportunity: The Marine Stewardship Council is Hiring a Fisheries Research Scientist

Lead Innovative Research

The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is looking for a Fisheries Research Scientist, who can use best available research and data science to inform the MSC program. You'll be responsible for supporting the impact evaluation of the MSC, through dedicated research projects on changes in fisheries management or mitigation of bycatch and other ecosystem effects.

You'll also support the MSC's transparent, reproducible science approach, using internal databases and publicly available data, such as stock assessments or bycatch monitoring data, through advanced quantitative analyses. Your work will involve representing the MSC in national and international scientific meetings and conferences (online or, if it is safe to do so, in person), and contributing to peer-reviewed publications.

Ideally, they are looking for someone to fill the role in London, however they are open to applications from the United States and would like to hear from applicants who can be based in Seattle or Washington DC

You Will Have

A PhD or equivalent experience in quantitative marine sciences

Proven experience in fisheries research, data science and statistical analyses (stock assessment experience or evaluation of impacts on endangered threatened and protected species preferred, spatial modelling a plus) a good understanding of marine resource management and conservation biology issues, as well as an interest in learning the MSC's internal processes and governance structures

Excellent IT skills, including proven experience with open source statistical software such as R, and excellent coding skills.

Who Is The MSC?

The MSC's vision is for the world's oceans to be teeming with life, and seafood supplies safeguarded for this and future generations. Through their internationally-recognized certification and ecolabeling program well-managed sustainable fisheries are recognized and rewarded in the market place, through the leadership of their partners. Critically, other fisheries are incentivized to improve their performance to meet the growing demand for certified sustainable and traceable seafood choice.

Over 400 fisheries around the world, representing 16% of the annual global marine catch, are now engaged in the MSC program and over 1200 documented improvements to the way the oceans are being fished have been recorded. MSC certified and labelled seafood products are now available in over 100 countries.
