The Security Screener plays a critical role in maintaining the safety and security of Pier 91 operations. This position ensures compliance with federal and facility-specific security protocols by screening passengers, baggage, and cargo. The Screener is the first line of defense in identifying prohibited items and ensuring a secure, efficient, and customer-focused screening process.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Conducts pre-board screening of passengers, visitors, vendors, terminal staff, baggage, and cargo using approved procedures and equipment in accordance with the Terminal Screening Plan (TSP).
- Delivers exceptional customer service to passengers, clients, vendors, terminal employees, and ship crew, ensuring a courteous and professional experience.
- Ensures compliance with all company policies, procedures, and physical control requirements related to Sensitive Security Information (SSI).
- Reports and documents all irregularities, including unauthorized access, contraband, equipment damage, or safety incidents, using daily logs and incident reports.
- Maintains accurate records of all screening activities, logs, and reports in a timely and organized manner.
- Operates screening equipment, ensures cleanliness of equipment, and operational readiness.
- Supports seamless workflow by coordinating with team members to ensure timely and secure processing of all guests, terminal staff, vendors, visitors and crew.
- Participates in ongoing training and maintain certification standards as required by the company and regulatory bodies.
- Maintains availability for variable shifts, including weekends and holidays.
- Works in a fast-paced, client-facing environment with high attention to detail.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
- Provide friendly, professional assistance to guests, fellow team members, vendors, and contractors.
- Use covert codes via radio when notification of prohibited item detection.
- Always use provided earpiece and microphone attachments when a radio is assigned to you.
- Direct questions or operational issues to Leads/Supervisors as needed.
- Respond calmly to prohibited item detections.
- Complete brief activity or incident reports as assigned using approved formats.
- Support and participate in Sim Fox simulator training as required.
- Education: High school diploma or GED.
- Experience: Prior experience as a Screener with proof of certification (current or expired).
- Licenses: Ability to obtain or maintain valid Unarmed Private Guard Card (in accordance with state, county, or city regulations) and valid TWIC card.
- Certification: Successfully complete the TSS Pre-Board Screener Course as a requirement of employment.
- Knowledge: Understanding of MTSA regulations and facility security protocols.
- Skills:
- Proficiency in English (reading, writing, speaking).
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to focus on designated tasks and avoid distractions in a busy environment.
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Additional Experiences: Customer service experience in a high-volume or MTSA regulated setting.
- Prior experience: Prior Screener with proof of certification (current or expired).
- Certifications: MTSA and Pre-Board Security Screener certification (if not already held, training is provided by company upon hire).
- Knowledge: Familiarity with maritime or port security operations.
- Skills: Ability to calmly and professionally manage tense or confrontational situations.
- Physical Demands: This role requires the ability to sit, stand, and bend down, for extended periods, including frequent movement between workstations. The Pre-Board Screener must inspect identification documents, operate radios and X-ray equipment. Work is performed indoors. Occasional lifting of up to 20 pounds may be required. Visual focus, basic computer and writing skills are essential.
Final candidates must successfully complete a background check and drug screening, in accordance with applicable laws and company policy. - Work Environment: Work is performed at indoor security stations. Conditions may include exposure to noise, forklift traffic, and active operational zones. Personal protective equipment (PPE) and uniforms are provided and required as needed.
