The University of Washington Police Department, a unit in the Division for Campus Community Safety has an outstanding opportunity for a Deputy Chief for Police Operations to join their team.
About this Opportunity
The University of Washington Police Department is an accredited public safety department that provides for the overall safety and security of the campus community. UWPD's responsibilities include deterring, reducing and solving crime; engaging in proactive crime prevention and problem-solving strategies; completing investigations for prosecution; dignitary protection; and handling large crowds such as NCAA football games and other athletic events, concerts and other activities.
Reporting to Chief of Police, and operating with delegated authority, the Deputy Chief for Police Operations provides leadership and manages the department's operations and functions to provide effective and efficient law enforcement and public safety services to the citizens of the University of Washington.
This position is responsible for oversight of the Operations Division, which includes Patrol, Criminal Investigations, Security Services, and Quartermaster, and serves as liaison to external partners including SPD, WSP, FBI, Eastside Chiefs, King County Police Chiefs & Sheriffs, and Coalition of Small Police Agencies (CSPA). This position is also responsible for continuous enforcement of laws and ordinances, the protection of life and property, and the preservation of peace within the University community.
This position is part of the senior leadership team for UWPD and, with the Deputy Chief for Police Administration, will assume command of the Department in the absence of the Chief of Police.
Responsible for oversight of Patrol Operations (including direct management of two Lieutenants and Security Services Manager), which is charged with, continuous enforcement of laws and ordinances, the protection of life and property, and the preservation of peace within the University community, as well as planning for special events.
This position works 100% onsite. This position is located at UW Police Department in a state-of-the-art building 3939 15th Ave NE. Applicants must be comfortable working in a police station environment.
Key Responsibilities
* Plans, directs and manages the Operations Division to include Patrol, Criminal Investigations, Security Services, and Quartermaster; oversees the planning, scheduling and assigning of work within Patrol Operations, including supervising planning and operational logistics for large scale Special Events; oversees the Security Operations Center (SOC) and security camera proposals on campus property. In partnership with the Deputy Chief for Operations, provides leadership and management oversight for the entire department in the absence of the Chief of Police.

* Evaluates subordinate performance; participates in personnel actions such as appointments, promotions, demotions, discipline and scheduling; reviews crime trends; directs the development of personnel assigned to the Operations Division, including supervision of education and training of department personnel 15%
* Reviews Department policies and procedures and develops, recommends, implements methods, systems, and tools to increase Department efficiency. 10%
* Assists with community outreach efforts and special projects; serves designated Public Information Officer (PIO) and coordinates press releases as needed in collaboration with the other members of the Command Staff and Division of Strategic & Crisis Communications; fosters communications and cooperation with other law enforcement agencies, departments and personnel. 10%
* Facilitates (with the Crime Analyst) information and statistics used in the creation of weekly, monthly and annual reports with an emphasis on supporting the department's mission statement, policies and procedures and organizational assessment and improvement, and direction of policing services to address problem areas identified in the statistical analytics. 10%
