Security Guard

The Division of Campus Community Safety (DCCS) unifies front‑line public safety units across the University for a holistic approach to campus community safety, innovation in approaches, and clarity in leadership responsibility and accountability. Key units include UW Emergency Management, Safe Campus and the Seattle campus UW Police Department. Division staff work daily in partnership with units across and outside the UW system to create safer, welcoming campus environments, prepare for potential natural or human‑made disasters, and respond appropriately to incidents.

Purpose:

Enhance the safety of students and personnel by providing safety and security patrols to campus facilities and areas where assigned.

• Perform duties primarily on foot; may operate University vehicle as needed.
• Provide Safety Escort service as part of the Husky Night Walk Program to various locations on campus during the designated times, as necessary and approved by on‑duty supervisor.
• All drivers must adhere to the Washington State Traffic Laws at all times while on duty and operating a University vehicle and successfully complete the UW Transportation – Safe Driver program before driving a university vehicle.
• Respond to medical emergencies during security shift times by requesting Seattle Fire Medics to the location and administering first‑aid if authorized and trained to do so.
• Avoid confrontational situations; request a police officer presence immediately if such a situation starts to develop.
• Advise UWPD dispatch via radio whenever suspected criminal activity and/or suspicious circumstances are observed. Do not make contact or engage in use of force tactics unless an extreme situation occurs.
• Perform secondary responsibilities when assigned: roving patrols of buildings, parking lots/garages and bike racks for criminal and/or suspicious activity; building admits; building checks and sweeps; battery jumps; special security details; other specified functions determined by the on‑duty supervisor.

• Physical capacity to perform duties.
• Possession of a valid motor vehicle driver’s license.
• No previous felony convictions.

• Security experience.
• Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, including clear radio transmissions during emergencies and maintaining legible records.
• Excellent customer service skills and ability to interface professionally with a diverse community.
• Good analytical and observation skills.
• Sound judgment and decision‑making ability.
• Ability to exercise under stressful situations while maintaining composure.
• Ability to work with minimal supervision as well as in a teamwork atmosphere.
• Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information.
• Basic computer skills.
• Ability to handle multiple tasks concurrently.
• Adaptability to changes in the external environment, including inclement weather and protective gear.
• First Aid and CPR certification (or ability to obtain and maintain certifications upon hire).
• Flexible and available to work night shifts, weekends, and overtime with little or no advance notice.
• Comfortable working solo, including in high‑rise buildings.

• Ability and willingness to work outside in all types of weather conditions.
• No felony convictions.
• Driving history for the past three years must not exhibit a pattern of unsafe driving habits, and must have no convictions for Reckless Driving, Negligent Driving, or Driving under the Influence of Alcohol or Drugs.
• Ability to work at night.
