About Seattle Sustainable Landscapes
Seattle Sustainable Landscapes (SSL) is a fast-growing, residential-focused landscaping company built on craftsmanship, sustainability, and people helping people. Our Irrigation & Lighting Division is growing faster than any other part of the company, and we are building it from the field up — not from behind a desk.
This role is designed for a senior irrigation technician who wants to stay hands-on today and grow into a leadership role over time.
The Role:
Senior Technician First, Division Leader Over Time
The Irrigation Division Manager role begins as a highly physical, hands-on field position. In the early phase, the majority of your time will be spent:
- Working alongside other technicians
- Performing diagnostics, repairs, and installs
- Supporting the crew in the field
- Setting the technical standard by example
As the division continues to grow and generate the revenue to support it, this role will gradually transition into increased leadership, coordination, and planning responsibility.
This is a true player-coach pathway, not a management-only role.
What the Role Looks Like Right Now(First Phase – Primarily Field Work)
- Perform advanced irrigation diagnostics and repair
- Lead and support irrigation installs (stand-alone and Design-Build projects)
- Work directly in the field with irrigation technicians
- Handle complex repairs and problem systems
- Support outdoor lighting installs and service (smaller portion of work)
- Provide on-the-job coaching and technical guidance
- Perform physical labor daily (digging, trenching, lifting, kneeling, working outdoors)
Administrative work in this phase is minimal and secondary to field production.
How the Role Grows Over Time(Second Phase – Player/Coach Leadership)
As the division scales, responsibilities will expand to include:
- Leading and mentoring the irrigation team
- Coordinating schedules with the Irrigation Office Manager
- Creating estimates and bids for irrigation and lighting projects
- Meeting with clients for site evaluations and proposals
- Managing irrigation-only projects end-to-end
- Overseeing irrigation scopes within Design-Build construction projects
- Helping refine systems, standards, and workflows
The pace of this transition will be intentional and realistic, aligned with division growth—not forced prematurely.
Daily Work Environment- Morning start at our Seattle shop/location
- Majority of time spent in the field
- Client meetings and job site walkthroughs as needed
- Some remote/admin flexibility over time as the role evolves
- Seasonal workload consistent with irrigation work in the Pacific Northwest
This role is ideal for someone who:
- Is a senior irrigation technician today
- Enjoys physical work and leading by example
- Wants to grow into leadership without leaving the field immediately
- Is trusted by peers for technical skill and problem-solving
- Communicates well with both crews and homeowners
- Wants long-term growth, not just the next job
- Strong hands-on experience with irrigation diagnostics and repair
- System installs
- Valves, controllers, drip systems, backflow & point of connection installation
- Ability to perform physical labor daily
- Experience supporting or informally leading other technicians
- Comfortable working outdoors in varying conditions
- Valid driver’s license
- Outdoor or landscape lighting experience
- Bilingual (English / Spanish)
- Experience working with design-build teams
- Interest in leadership and mentoring (formal management experience not required)
- Base Salary: $80,000–$100,000 (DOE)
- Commission on sold irrigation and lighting work
- Clear growth path into increased leadership responsibility
- Opportunity to help shape a rapidly growing division
- Supportive, people-first company culture
This role exists to:
- Strengthen the field team right now
- Raise the technical bar across the division
- Create a sustainable leadership pathway from within
- Ensure growth doesn’t outpace craftsmanship
If you love being in the field, solving tough irrigation problems, and want a clear path into leadership as the company grows—this role was built for you.
