Maintenance Mechanic 1 Correctional Industries Headquarters, Tumwater, WA

Correctional Industries (CI) within the Department of Corrections (DOC) is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual to fill a permanent vacancy as a Maintenance Mechanic
1. This position is located at CI HQ in Tumwater, WA and typically works from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The position is represented by Teamsters Local Union 117 - DOC.

This position supports the objective by providing semi-skilled maintenance, repair, remodeling, alterations and construction of buildings, grounds, facilities and equipment. This includes performing corrective and preventative maintenance to maintain a safe and secure workplace for staff and incarcerated workers, visitors, contractors and vendors.

This position reports to CI HQ Operations Manager and supports the sub-journey level work performed by incarcerated work crews and assessing their maintenance performance. It recommends strategies, procedures, goals and objectives and implements these programs. Ensures that policies, RCW, WAC rules and Department of Corrections policies are enforced and adhered to.

Key Responsibilities

Conducts and supervises the incarcerated workforce in semi-skilled mechanical work, repairs, and building remodels.

  • Frames walls, rafters, and roofs. Hangs, tapes, and prepares interior drywall walls for paint and/or repair.
  • Completes routine painting for both interior and exterior areas, including existing walls and structures.
  • Seals and caulks buildings.
  • Installs and maintains plumbing, as well as light electrical and mechanical fixtures.
  • Performs preventive and corrective maintenance on roofs, gutters, sidewalks, roads, fencing, gates, and buildings.

Oversees, trains, and assesses the performance of assigned incarcerated workers.

  • Train and assess the performance of incarcerated workers on all maintenance projects, and provide constructive feedback on their progress and performance.
  • Educate incarcerated workers on the proper safety, operation, maintenance, and use of tools and equipment; ensure that training documents are completed and maintained in their files.
  • Prepare written evaluations for incarcerated workers and ensure that their files are updated and current.
  • Provide transportation for incarcerated workers from Cedar Creek Correction Center to Correctional Industries Headquarters as needed.

Conducts and supervises, trains incarcerated workers in janitorial duties.

  • Schedules and assigns incarcerated workers to specific tasks, escort to and from work details and inspects areas.
  • Keeps an inventory of supplies and equipment, prepares reports as requested by supervisor.
  • Orders supplies and equipment, ensuring that sufficient quantities are maintained to support daily operations.
