Overview
This position is open to all King County employees and the general public. The Rail Facilities Mechanics are responsible for the maintenance, repair and upgrades of Light Rail operating facilities, supporting systems and equipment. Responsibilities also include the coordination and oversight of the work performed by outside contractors working in an assortment of crafts and engaging in a variety of building and systems maintenance, repair and enhancement.
This recruitment may immediately fill up to seven (7) Career Service positions and may also be used to establish an eligibility pool for future Career Service vacancies in this classification, valid up to 12 months or until exhausted and at the discretion of the hiring authority.
About Metro Transit's Expanding Rail DivisionKing County Metro Transit's Rail Division manages and maintains Sound Transit's Link light rail service and City of Seattle’s streetcar system. Link light rail currently spans a 41‑mile route from Sea Tac to Federal Way and a 6.6‑mile route from Redmond to South Bellevue. By the end of 2026, light rail is projected to expand to nearly 60 route miles, adding two new stations.
Seattle Streetcar includes the 1.3‑mile South Lake Union line and the 2.5‑mile First Hill line, proudly serving the diverse and vibrant communities around Seattle’s downtown core.
Per the union contract, shift differential is paid to those working second and third shifts. Shift pay is 5% for second shift and 7.5% for third shift, on top of hourly pay. The pay range is a five‑step range, with the full rates listed below:
- First (day & “base pay” rate): $38.82–$55.46 per hour.
- Second (swing) Shift: $40.76–$58.23 per hour.
- Third (graveyard) Shift: $41.73–$59.62 per hour.
This position is anticipated to be full time, assigned 40 hours per week. Employees must be able and willing to work any shift (day, swing or graveyard). This position will initially work the day/night shift with a 4/10 or 5/8 schedule during the training period. Work shift is subject to change based on a seniority bid system and the needs of the business.
In addition, this position has on‑call responsibilities and must respond to emergency situations as needed. This position is non‑exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is therefore overtime eligible, with prior supervisory approval.
