UW Facilities Maintenance & Construction has an outstanding opportunity for a temporary Floor layer. This position is expected to be 6 months.

Work Schedule
  • Full time, Monday through Friday, 6:55 a.m. to 3:25 p.m.
  • This position is based at the Plant Services Building on the Seattle campus and is not eligible for telework.
About this opportunity

Reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor 2, the Floor layer performs journey-level flooring installation, repair, and maintenance work across a wide range of University facilities. This position supports the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of campus buildings by preparing surfaces and installing, repairing, and replacing carpet, tile, linoleum, vinyl, rubber base, and other flooring materials. The Floor layer works collaboratively with supervisors, team members, and other trades to complete projects efficiently while maintaining high standards of workmanship, safety, and customer service in support of the University community.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare surfaces for flooring installation by scraping, chipping, cleaning, and inspecting for damage. (20%)
  • Install, repair, and replace carpet, tile, linoleum, specialty vinyl, and rubber base materials. (30%)
  • Measure, cut, stretch, tack, sew, and finish flooring materials to specification. (5%)
  • Apply adhesives, grouts, pastes, and other installation materials safely and effectively. (10%)
  • Estimate labor, materials, and repair costs for flooring projects. (Occasional / as needed)
  • Operate flooring tools and equipment, including carpet stretchers, drills, hammers, forklifts, scissor lifts, and service vehicles. (5%)
  • Load, unload, transport, and organize tools, equipment, and materials at job sites. (5%)
  • Monitor project progress and communicate status, material needs, and issues with supervisors and team leads. (5%)
  • Collaborate with other facilities and maintenance teams to complete projects efficiently. (5%)
  • Train or provide guidance to semiskilled workers as assigned. (Occasional / as needed)
  • Follow all occupational safety regulations, SDS requirements, hazard review procedures, and PPE standards. (5%)
  • Provide professional customer service while complying with organizational policies, procedures, training, and assigned duties. (5%)
Minimum Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity your application must demonstrate you meet both the minimum qualifications and additional qualifications listed below. Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.

  • Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a floor layer or carpet layer; OR full journey status as a floor layer or carpet layer in a union; OR four years’ applicable work experience. Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license may be required.

Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge and practical experience with WISHA (Washington Industrial Safety & Health Act) and OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Act) regulations.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with standard productivity software including Microsoft Office Suite or equivalent products.
  • Demonstrated successful ability in taking direction, working well with others and as a member of a team.
  • Demonstrated excellent effective verbal and written communication skills.
Working Conditions
  • May be required to accept variable work shift.
  • Work may require access to confined spaces and heights using approved safety precautions.
  • Ability to lift and move heavy material may be required.
  • Approved footwear must be provided at the employee’s expense and worn on the job.
  • Must be able to be fitted for and wear a respirator on the job.
