Marine Service Technician – Diesel & Propulsion (Salmon Bay)
Location: Seattle, WA (Salmon Bay)
Department: Marine Service Operations
Reports To: Service Leader
Work Type: Full-Time, Non-Exempt
Travel: Up to 25 percent, primarily local
Direct Reports: None
Compensation: $35.00 to $45.00 per hour (based experience)
Field Pay Bonus: Additional $1.50 per hour when working in the field
Sign-on Bonus: Up to $10,000 DOE
Role OverviewThis role is designed for a journey-level marine technician who wants steady, local field work, strong operational support, and the opportunity to work on modern marine propulsion systems without excessive travel or shop-only confinement.
As a Journey-Level Marine Technician based in Salmon Bay, you will perform diagnostics, repairs, and performance verification on diesel and gasoline marine engines supporting commercial, government, and mission‑critical vessels. You will operate independently in the field, represent MSHS PPG professionally at customer sites, and focus on quality workmanship, safety, and reliability.
You will be home nightly, work a consistent weekday schedule, and have access to manufacturer training to continue advancing your technical skill set.
What You’ll Be Doing- Diagnose, inspect, and repair marine diesel and gasoline propulsion systems
- Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and electronic engine issues using OEM diagnostic tools
- Perform maintenance, component replacements, and overhauls in accordance with manufacturer standards
- Conduct sea trials and post‑repair testing to verify performance and reliability
- Complete warranty repairs and evaluate service and parts options for cost‑effective solutions
- Accurately document service work, findings, and recommendations using digital systems
- Communicate clearly and professionally with customers on site regarding repairs and next steps
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment and service vehicle
- Follow all MSHS PPG safety, environmental, and operational standards
- Participate in required manufacturer training, online and in person
- Marine technicians currently working on commercial, workboat, or mixed‑fleet vessels
- Technicians with diesel or gasoline engine backgrounds looking for stable, local marine work
- Field service technicians who enjoy troubleshooting and hands‑on problem solving
- Technicians who want technical ownership without people management responsibilities
- 2 or more years of hands‑on experience diagnosing, servicing, and repairing marine diesel and gasoline engine systems
- Experience working on marine propulsion systems in commercial, workboat, or mixed‑fleet environments
- Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills
- Ability to read and interpret service manuals, schematics, and technical documentation
- Proficiency with computer‑based diagnostic tools for troubleshooting and service documentation
- Ability to work independently in a field environment with minimal supervision
- Valid driver’s license and ability to be insured under company policy
- Own a complete set of mechanic’s tools, metric and SAE
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work indoors or outdoors in varying conditions
- Willingness to complete manufacturer training, online and in person
- Ability to pass background check and drug screening
- Experience with major marine engine platforms such as Cummins, MTU, Volvo Penta, Detroit Diesel, CAT, Yanmar, or equivalent systems
- Experience with both inboard and outboard marine engines
- Familiarity with electronic engine controls, ECMs, and diesel engine management systems
- Experience conducting sea trials and post‑repair performance verification
- Prior field service or customer‑facing technician experience
- Washington State Boater’s Card
- Technical or vocational training in marine mechanics, diesel technology, or a related field
- Background in power generation, heavy equipment, or industrial diesel engines with marine crossover exposure
