Summary
The Rail Track & ROW Maintainer will perform journey‑level trades work to troubleshoot, diagnose, maintain, repair, weld, upgrade and conduct comprehensive preventive maintenance on track, special track work, track switches, aerial and tunnel structures and supports, retaining walls, fencing, and associated equipment and components.
Job DutiesAs the Rail Track & ROW Maintainer, you will:
- Inspect, diagnose, repair, maintain, and replace running rails, restraining rails, fasteners, switch components, crossings, and all other track maintenance components.
- Operate service vehicles, small cranes, and other track maintenance equipment.
- Use rail saws, rail drills, portable ballast tampers, and other specialized tools to perform inspection, maintenance, and repair tasks.
- Set up work‑zone traffic control areas and flag trackways to create safe rail work zones.
- Operate switch machines under revenue and non‑revenue conditions.
- Prioritize emergency maintenance tasks when supervision is not present.
- Record and document maintenance and diagnostic data.
- Assist other trades and respond to emergency calls as needed.
- Perform snow and ice removal and other duties as assigned.
- At least one year of experience using hand and powered tools or equivalent combination of experience and education.
- Ability to differentiate colors and estimate basic speeds, and hear and listen for environmental cues.
- Knowledge of FRA, APTA, FTA, and AREMA standards for rail track inspection and maintenance.
- Demonstrated experience operating rail and crane equipment.
- Knowledge of track and structure maintenance work for rail systems.
- Knowledge of industrial safety standards and procedures, including use of small cranes and lifting equipment.
- Skill in reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, and drawings.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Basic computer software proficiency.
- Problem‑solving and analytical skills.
- Mechanical tool skills for fixed track and associated structures.
- Knowledge of codes and compliance requirements for tracks and structures.
- Ability to work safely in all weather and environmental conditions.
- Knowledge of concrete work and finishing.
- Ability to deal proactively and sensitively with customers and coworkers, demonstrating commitment to inclusion, fairness, and equity.
- Knowledge of traffic safety techniques for establishing safe work zones on track and roadways.
- Experience with Maintenance Management Information Systems (MMIS), Enterprise Asset Management Systems (EAMS) or similar work‑order tracking systems.
- Knowledge of hardware, manuals, procedures, parts catalogs, and related documentation.
- Ability to operate radio and telephone communication systems per FTA regulations.
- Railroad welding experience with SMAW, GMAW, exothermic welding, and experience with Manganese steel; certification or willingness to obtain certification.
Special Requirements
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable record; WA State license within 30 days if out‑of‑state.
- Washington State Class “A” or “B” commercial driver’s license (CDL) with air brake endorsement, or Class “A” or “B” commercial learner's permit (CLP) by conditional offer, and ability to obtain full CDL with air brake within 6 months.
- Certification in Hi‑Rail, forklift, aerial lift, first‑aid/CPR, and others (training provided).
- Ability to meet ongoing educational and training requirements and maintain certifications.
The position requires mobility, heavy manual labor, standing, walking long distances, and lifting materials, tools, and objects up to 100 pounds.
