Position: Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning (HVAC) Technician

About the Role

The City of Seattle is seeking experienced, reliable, and team‑oriented HVAC Technicians to join our team. HVAC Technicians will serve many locations including Seattle City Hall, Seattle Municipal Tower, fleet management garages, Seattle City Fire, and more.

Responsibilities
  • Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and install HVAC equipment.
  • Work with equipment such as heat pumps, coolers, chillers, refrigeration units, air handlers, VAV systems, exhaust systems, condensers, evaporators, coils, strip heaters, boilers, thermostats, VFDs, and hot water systems.
  • Collaborate on troubleshooting and repairing DDC and pneumatic controls.
  • Operate computerized controls.
  • Maintain documentation for services performed and shop materials used.
  • Respond to facilities‑related inquiries and emergencies.
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety of work and jobsite spaces.
Minimum Qualifications

Two years of experience in the operation and maintenance of HVAC systems, or two years of technical school HVAC coursework.

License, Certification, and Other Requirements
  • Within 90 days of hire, obtain required city licenses and certifications in HVAC operation and maintenance.
  • City of Seattle Grade III Steam Engineer’s license (requires at least three years of boiler operation experience or equivalent education, plus one year of experience).
  • City of Seattle Refrigeration Mechanic’s License class A (requires three years of refrigeration repair and installation experience as an apprentice or journeyman, or two years of training in a recognized trade school plus one year of experience, or two years of full‑time experience and graduation from a recognized trade school).
  • L06A or EL07 Washington State Electrician Specialty License (requires a minimum of 4,000 hours of supervised work under a journey‑level electrician and includes HVAC/refrigeration system (EL06A) and nonresidential maintenance (EL07)).
  • EPA CFC Universal Certificate.
  • Current Washington State driver’s license or ability to obtain one by the start date.
Preferred Qualifications and Skills
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills to diagnose and solve problems independently.
  • Ability to work within a diverse workforce.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team setting or alone.
  • Ability to follow verbal or written instructions.
  • Organizational skills to handle medium to complex problems and competing priorities.
  • Experience in maintaining and operating digital control systems.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
  • Full‑time onsite work.
  • Stand, walk, or bend for extended periods.
  • Lift objects weighing over 50 pounds.
  • Work in confined spaces or at heights from ladders and scaffolds.
  • May require handling toxic or hazardous substances.
  • Work outdoors in all types of weather.
  • Comply with PPE standards and all safety guidelines.
  • Read and interpret blueprints.
  • May be called after hours for emergency repairs.
Compensation

This position is classified as a Regular, Full‑Time Civil Service position. The full range for this step‑progression position is $61.79 to $66.81 per hour.

Background Check and Physical

Applicants must successfully pass a background check and a pre‑employment physical.

Driving Record

A current, full driver’s abstract from the Department of Licensing must be submitted upon offer of employment. Candidates with a driving history that does not meet the current safety standards will be disqualified from consideration.
