A Day in the Life of the Field Deployment Technician I:
The Field Deployment Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of network equipment including microwave and millimeter-wave radios, routers, switches, fiber and copper cabling, and Wi‑Fi systems, both indoors and outdoors. The position requires working at heights, participating in a 24/7 on‑call rotation, performing site surveys, documenting as‑builts, and ensuring all work meets safety and quality standards. Ideal candidates will have hands‑on networking experience, strong troubleshooting skills, the ability to work independently in fast‑paced environments, and a valid driver’s license.
- Perform installations, troubleshoot and repair of Astound Broadband Powered by Wave infrastructure including network connections from microwave and millimeter‑wave radio headend to backbone equipment/hardware (interior and exterior).
- Participate in a 24/7 on‑call rotation.
- Connect and disconnect, upgrade, downgrade, and relocate equipment; install additional hand‑offs and install or remove equipment.
- Install and troubleshoot radio – microwave and millimeter‑wave equipment.
- Install routers and switches.
- Cable placement – terminations and splicing – optical fiber and copper.
- Install Wi‑Fi equipment – indoor‑outdoor.
- Perform basic DC/AC installation, knowledge and best practices.
- As‑builts and documentation – create build history/documents and upload to the internal Wiki.
- Perform site surveys.
- Complete various tasks and special projects assigned by manager associated with the organization and company, emphasizing driving efficiency and optimization.
- Required to work at heights installing telecom equipment/materials.
- RF awareness preferred; will certify.
- Basic to intermediate experience in physical, data‑link and network protocols and architectures.
- Experience with routers, firewalls and switches.
- System load balancing and redundant system architecture.
- Ability to set up and design simple to complex networks involving wireless equipment, Cisco switches and routers.
- Strong diagnostic and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to follow direction and follow through.
- Enjoy challenge of technical concepts and communicate them at varying levels.
- Basic experience with LAN and WAN technology.
- Compliance with all company safety procedures.
- Knowledge of basic mathematics and electronics; vision ability – close vision, peripheral vision, ability to adjust focus.
- Strong attention to detail, time management, organization.
- Basic knowledge of DC components and best practices.
- Basic understanding of physical network layer, CAT5e/6, 66 blocks, 110 blocks, patch panels, fiber optic cables.
- Work in fast‑paced, dynamic environments with limited supervision; work independently; stand 50‑70% of time; work with small components and wires; make cable connections in tight spaces; differentiate sizes/colors of wires; lift 50lbs repeatedly.
- Communication skills (telephone, correspondence, in person).
- Excellent command of English – enunciation, grammar, no slang.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Education:
high school diploma or equivalent required.
- Base salary range: $22.00 – $28.00 per hour (Field Deployment TechnicianI: $22.00 – $25.00; Technician II: $25.00 – $28.00).
