Underground Utility Mechanic | Seattle, WACompany Overview

Our client is a fully integrated energy services provider operating highly efficient utility infrastructures across 10 U.S. cities. Their Seattle operations produce and distribute steam, hot water, and chilled water to commercial customers and campuses throughout the downtown core, serving over 170 million square feet of space nationally.

Role Summary

The Underground Utility Mechanic is responsible for performing maintenance and construction work on an underground steam distribution system in an active urban environment. Work takes place around excavation sites, confined spaces, heavy industrial equipment, and busy downtown streets. This is a permanent, full-time, on-site position and a Bargaining Unit role requiring membership in IBEW Local 77.

Responsibilities
  • Perform maintenance and construction work on underground steam distribution systems
  • Cut, fit, and thread pipe; install insulation; recondition valves and steam traps
  • Operate heavy equipment and handle heavy materials in active jobsite conditions
  • Perform excavation, trenching, and shoring in confined work spaces
  • Conduct flagging and traffic control in busy urban environments
  • Work in trenches, vaults, and shored excavations following strict confined space protocols
  • Operate jackhammers, tampers, compactors, cut-off saws, pole drivers, and similar equipment
  • Handle pipe, valves, fittings, insulation, and heavy materials
  • Perform welding work as directed; certified pipe welders (ASME Section IX) receive a pay premium
  • Follow all PPE requirements and safety procedures in a high-risk construction environment
  • Perform air monitoring as needed; potential exposure to asbestos-containing material
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Valid Washington State CDL Class A
  • Experience with confined space entry
  • Experience with shoring and trenching
  • Experience with flagging and traffic control
  • CPR and First Aid training
  • Must be at least 21 years of age and maintain a clean driving record
  • Non-tobacco/nicotine users only (Washington state requirement)
  • Must pass pre-employment background check and drug test
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
  • Comfortable working in tight spaces, elevated positions, and all weather conditions year-round
  • Must be able to twist, turn, bend, and hold arms at or above the head regularly
  • Good eyesight including color differentiation, hearing, and manual dexterity required
  • Must wear all required PPE including respirators, steel toe footwear, fall protection, and eye and hearing protection
Schedule & Compensation
  • Monday through Friday, 8 hours per day
  • Full benefits starting day one including medical, dental, vision, life and AD&D
  • 401k with 5% company match
  • Pay premium available for certified pipe welders
