Summary

This position is part of King County Metro’s Vehicle Maintenance Division. The Transit Mechanic will be responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a fleet of diesel, hybrid, electric, and trolley buses as well as related equipment.

About the Transit Mechanic

Technicians in this division work with a dynamic fleet that includes diesel, trolley, hybrid, and fully electric buses. The role requires strong technical skills and the ability to keep a large number of vehicles operational.

Safety Sensitive Position

This is a safety‑sensitive position. Applicants must pass drug testing and may be subject to ongoing testing, background checks, and a pre‑employment physical per DOT regulations.

Job Duties
  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical defects in gasoline, diesel, hybrid, and electric powered buses and related equipment.
  • Operate and maintain electronic diagnostic equipment.
  • Diagnose, dismantle, repair, and overhaul internal combustion engines, transmissions, differentials, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems.
  • Install, maintain, and repair electrical and mechanical units of trolley coaches using diagrams and schematics.
  • Perform wheel alignment, brake and pump repair, starter and injector replacement, and other mechanical maintenance tasks.
  • Install and repair auxiliary systems such as fare collection, communication, and surveillance electronics.
  • Operate overhead cranes, hydraulic lifts, hoists, jacks, and lathes, as certified.
  • Conduct field repair work and emergency road repairs; operate the wrecker truck to tow disabled coaches.
  • Maintain records of repairs, time worked, and material used.
  • Enter and retrieve data in the automated vehicle maintenance system.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, and Skills
  • Journey Level knowledge and skills in automotive and diesel repair.
  • Four years of heavy‑duty diesel or automotive maintenance experience as a Journey Level mechanic; OR five years of related experience plus a vocational program; OR any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of mechanical principles of gasoline, diesel, and all‑electric engines; fluid, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems; powertrain, suspension, and chassis components; and electrical/ignition/safety systems.
  • Knowledge of auxiliary system installation, maintenance, and repair (fare collection, communication, surveillance).
  • Proficiency with diagnostic techniques and fleet repair equipment.
  • Understanding of safety rules, shop safety, and applicable regulations.
  • Basic computer skills for data entry and retrieval in maintenance systems.
  • Operational skill with electronic diagnostic equipment, power and hand tools, overhead cranes, hydraulic lifts, hoists, and wreckers.
  • Basic mathematics, customer service, and communication skills.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Experience with heavy‑duty diesel, bus, or truck fleet maintenance.
  • Experience with hybrid technology.
  • Experience with all‑electric propulsion systems.
  • Experience working in a structured, unionized team environment.
Special Requirements
  • Pass drug and alcohol testing required for safety‑sensitive positions.
  • Pass a post‑offer pre‑employment physical.
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable 5‑year driving record.
  • Within 90 days of hire, obtain a Class A CDL with passenger endorsement, or hold a Class B CDL or CLP with the appropriate endorsements and restrictions removed. Paid training will be provided to obtain a Class A CDL.

Work Schedule

40‑hour workweek with two consecutive days off. Employees may work any shift. Shift differentials: 5% for second shift, 7.5% for third shift.
