Facilities Carpenter
The Building Operations Services Section (BOS) of the Facilities Management Division (FMD) is looking to hire two (2) Short-Term Temporary (STT) journey-level Facilities Carpenters, as well as create a list for future opportunities. We are looking for someone that cares about providing excellent customer service and enjoys working on a team. Our ideal candidate will have journey-level carpentry experience performing maintenance, repair, and construction work in large facilities.
In addition to performing general carpentry duties, roofing, masonry, and lock repair and maintenance experience or cabinet-making is highly desirable.
Short-term Temporary (STT) Carpenters will be assigned to assist the BOS carpentry team with temporary work related to return-to-office initiatives or other project-based work.
The work performed by an STT employee is temporary and short-term in nature, not to exceed 6 months or a specified hour limit each year. STT positions are non-exempt and overtime eligible and are ineligible for county benefits.
Qualified candidates who pass the initial application subject matter expert review will be invited to participate in an in-person interview and practical assessment of their skills. The interviews will be held within 1-2 weeks at the King County Chinook Building in downtown Seattle, WA.
Maintain concrete and masonry structures, including sidewalks. Repair all structural components of buildings and other aspects including, guardrails, fences, decks, floors, walls, ceilings, and roofs. Maintain and repair roof, wall, ceiling and floor coverings including drywall, roofing, acoustical tiles and siding. Install and repair doors, windows and related hardware, including lock mechanisms, closures, keying systems and re-glazing. Build, install, repair and maintain finished materials including cabinets, millwork, tile, plastic-laminate, furniture, partitions.
Operate and maintain a variety of carpentry hand and power tools and equipment. Providing excellent customer service to the Division's clients and King County Customers. Other duties as assigned.
Completion of a verifiable apprenticeship program or two (2) years or more of full-time paid experience as a journey-level carpenter. Knowledge of basic mathematics formulas and construction terminology. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade. Knowledge of the qualities, grades, uses and adaptability of various woods, wood products & related materials used in all types of carpentry.
Demonstrated skill in the use and care of the tools and equipment used in the trade. Skill in completing time and materials estimates. Ability to clearly communicate orally and in writing.
Highly desirable:
Roofing, Masonry, Locks, Mechanical Gates and Rollup Doors, Flooring (carpet tiles and VCT), Tile, Laminate – Flooring, wall coverings, and counters, Cabinet Making/Finish Carpentry.
This recruitment is an effort to fill our urgent Short-Term Temporary (STT) positions and may also be used to create an eligibility list that will be used for any STT opportunities within the next 6 months. Reporting location will be the downtown Seattle core. Standard shift will be Monday – Friday, 6:55 AM - 3:25 PM. The shift is subject to change based on operational needs.
The Carpenter I position is non-exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and therefore overtime eligible. Employees are paid on a bi-weekly schedule, every other Thursday, comprising a 40-hour workweek; schedule and work location are to be determined. Incumbents in these positions are represented by the Joint Crafts Council, North Coast States Carpenters Union. The selected applicant must also possess a valid Washington State driver's license or the ability to travel throughout King County in a timely manner in a variety of County vehicles.
Final appointment is contingent upon reference checks and clearing a pre-employment physical examination. This position has been designated as a First Responder, which means that you have a role in emergency response and are responsible for the protection and preservation of life, property, evidence, environment, and/or the restoration of order.
