King County Fleet Services is looking for a dedicated Automotive Mechanic who will be responsible for performing timely repair and preventive maintenance on a variety of light to medium duty vehicles and equipment. This job also includes repair and maintenance as well as up‑fitting and preparing new vehicles for service. The position is well‑suited for an experienced dealership automotive maintenance mechanic.
AboutFleet Services Division
The Fleet Services Division manages King County’s portfolio of vehicles and equipment. The team performs acquisition, maintenance, repair, replacement, and disposal of approximately 3,000 fleet assets for the County’s services associated with the Sheriff’s Office, Public Health, Roads, Parks, Wastewater, Water and Land Resources, and other agencies. The division manages two maintenance shops which include robust storerooms of automotive parts, materials, and construction supplies as well as several technicians working in the field to support remote customer sites.
In addition, the Fleet Division is responsible for the disposition of the county’s personal property assets, which includes a surplus warehouse in Georgetown. Disposal methods can include re‑use within the county, donation to verified and approved non‑profits, and sales through online portals or sealed/negotiated bids.

Scope ofJob Duties
The successful candidate must demonstrate skill and ability to:
- Perform preventative maintenance, diagnose and repair all types of gas and diesel engines.
- Perform repairs and diagnostics on a variety of brake systems.
- Troubleshoot and repair emergency response vehicles, light bars and security device systems.
- Troubleshoot, repair, and replace suspension and electrical repairs to various front end suspension components, steering system components, electrical and light problems and charging system components including battery.
- Operate mechanical and electronic testing equipment to troubleshoot and repair systems.
- Provide technical assistance, direction and advice to other workers and give guidance on complex mechanical repair projects.
- Repair and maintain shop tools and machinery.
- Read and interpret vehicle repair manuals, electric and hydraulic schematics and illustrated parts diagrams.
- Up‑fit and prepare new vehicles for service. Maintain service, maintenance, and repair records.
- Have mechanical work experience repairing gas and diesel engines OR completion of vocational or technical school training in auto mechanics OR a recognized auto mechanics apprenticeship program.
- Be familiar with all aspects of vehicle operation and must understand the functions of the major components and systems.
- Be good problem solvers who can diagnose problems and make decisions about the most suitable repairs.
- Be comfortable using servicing and maintenance tools and equipment and be familiar with the different categories of lubricants and service parts.
- Be customer focused and able to communicate with customers, peers, managers, and supervisors.
- Be team players and understand the value of working well as a team.
- Be comfortable using an automated computer system to document maintenance, repairs, problems on work orders.
- Be knowledgeable of automotive shop safety rules, procedures, and equipment use.
- Have a certification to perform mobile air conditioning repairs, ASE Mater Certification, and be highly desirable.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon a valid Washington State Driver License and successfully passing our pre‑employment physical examination and reference check process.
Posess Tools and EquipmentThe County provides employees with a $1,000 per year tool allowance. The successful candidate must submit a complete tool inventory prior to start date. Must provide own tool kit consisting of standard and metric, open end and socket wrenches including:
