Position: Carpenter I - Short-Term Temporary (STT)

Short-Term Temporary (STT) Carpenters

The Building Operations Services (BOS) Section of the Facilities Management Division (FMD) is hiring two Short-Term Temporary (STT) journey-level Facilities Carpenters. Candidates should have journey-level carpentry experience performing maintenance, repair, and construction work in large facilities. Roofing, masonry, lock repair, and cabinet‑making experience is highly desirable.

STT Carpenters will assist the BOS carpentry team with temporary work related to return‑to‑office initiatives or other project‑based work. Positions are non‑exempt, overtime eligible, and have a maximum duration of 6 months or a specified hour limit each year. They are not eligible for county benefits.

Job Duties
  • Maintain concrete and masonry structures, including sidewalks.
  • Repair structural components of buildings including guardrails, fences, decks, floors, walls, ceilings, and roofs.
  • Maintain and repair roof, wall, ceiling, and floor coverings such as drywall, roofing, acoustical tiles, and siding.
  • Install and repair doors, windows, and related hardware including lock mechanisms, closures, and keying systems.
  • Build, install, repair, and maintain finished materials including cabinets, millwork, tile, laminate, furniture, and partitions.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of carpentry hand and power tools and equipment.
  • Provide excellent customer service to the Division’s clients and King County customers.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Completion of a verifiable apprenticeship program or at least two years of full‑time paid experience as a journey‑level carpenter.
  • Knowledge of basic mathematics formulas and construction terminology.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Knowledge of qualities, grades, uses, and adaptability of various woods and related materials used in all types of carpentry.
  • Demonstrated skill in the use and care of the tools and equipment used in the trade.
  • Skill in completing time and materials estimates.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing.

Position Information
  • This recruitment is to fill urgent Short-Term Temporary positions and may also create an eligibility list for future STT opportunities within the next six months.
  • Reporting location is the downtown Seattle core.
  • Standard shift:
    Monday – Friday, 6:55 AM – 3:25 PM (subject to change based on operational needs).
  • Position is non‑exempt and overtime eligible.
  • Paid bi‑weekly on a 40‑hour workweek; schedule and work location to be determined.
  • Incumbents are represented by the Joint Crafts Council, North Coast States Carpenters Union.
  • Must possess a valid Washington State driver’s license or ability to travel throughout King County in a timely manner in a variety of County vehicles.
  • Final appointment contingent upon reference checks and a pre‑employment physical examination.
  • Designated as a First Responder, responsible for emergency response and protection of life and property.
