Volunteer AmeriCorps Birth Doula

Position Summary

Sea Mar Community Health Centers is recruiting a Birth Doula Ameri Corps Member. The role is a full‑time volunteer position (10‑11 months) with a modest living allowance stipend and an education award upon completion.

• Participate in mandatory trainings, service projects and team building activities throughout the full‑time term of service.
• Schedule appointments and navigate patients through health system barriers.
• Initiate communication with patients, making supported referrals to address the full spectrum of patient needs.
• Provide the mother with emotional, physical, moral, and educational support, especially during times when the father and other close relatives are unavailable.
• Attend prenatal meetings to establish patient birth preferences and other requirements.
• Remain with the mother throughout labor, providing physical and emotional support during childbirth and in the immediate postpartum period.
• Visit the mother’s home after discharge and assist with care of the baby while the mother heals.
• Provide continuous doula services that meet the DONA International Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics.

• Be at least 17 years of age at the commencement of service; or under special circumstances be an out‑of‑school youth 16 years of age.
• Have a high school diploma or GED, or agree to obtain one prior to using the education award.
• Be a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident of the United States.
• Have the ability to interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; write routine reports and correspondence; and communicate effectively with clients or employees.
• Have excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to compile, interpret, and utilize information for people of all backgrounds.
• Be able to work with minimal supervision, use good judgment, meet deadlines, and prioritize workloads.
• Maintain confidentiality, professionalism, and appropriate boundaries in all interactions.
• Be well organized, detail oriented, computer literate, and possess good mathematical skills; experience in Windows Office programs preferred.
• Be able to solve problems and reason deductively, knowing when to seek help.
• Bilingual Spanish required.
• Reliable transportation is required.
