The Social Services Professional role at the King County Veterans Program (KCVP) provides comprehensive services including assessment, counseling, guidance and supportive services to eligible veterans, service members, and their families. This posting will be used to fill three (3) Career Service Social Services Professional roles and five (5) Term-Limited Temporary (TLT) Social Services Professional roles. The TLT roles are anticipated to be twelve (12) months in duration.
If filled by a King County employee who has passed their initial probation, the TLT will be as a Special Duty Assignment (SDA).
KCVP has two office locations:
Tukwila and Northgate/Seattle. These positions may be assigned at either of the two locations depending on operational need.
To be considered minimally qualified applicant must demonstrate a background that provides the knowledge, skills and ability to:
- Effectively provide case management services to King County veterans, service members and their families.
- Determine client eligibility for various veteran programs and other social service programs according to complex local, state, and federal regulations.
- Complete extensive eligibility documentation and program assessment tool(s) for barriers to employment, housing, benefits and productive living.
- Develop and maintain strong working relationships with the King County veteran social services community, community-based organizations, training and employment institutions, and other government programs.
- Be or become knowledgeable in local services available to veterans, especially those funded through the Veterans, Seniors and Human Services Levy (VSHSL).
- Assist veterans in finding and/or keeping housing through comprehensive planning, housing search, coordination with housing systems and partners, and supporting transportation needs for clients to various locations in support of housing plans.
- Assist veterans in identifying and reaching employment goals through comprehensive planning, referrals, preparation and retention services.
- Provide guidance, case management and planning for individual needs of cases through coordination of services with appropriate community resources.
- Prepare, track, and responsibly distribute King County financial assistance resources and communicate with vendors in the community.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with veterans.
- Mediate, problem-solve, advocate and coordinate individual services for veterans and their families.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's degree in social work or related field and at least two years recent social work/case management experience. Qualifying work experience may substitute year for year of education.
- Recent experience with adults presenting multiple and complex problems requiring coordination of cross-sector systems for resolution.
- Knowledge of federal and state laws pertaining to the rights, privileges, and benefits for veterans and other military personnel and their dependents and beneficiaries; and services provided by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and other veteran service organizations.
- Demonstrated ability to complete eligibility and assessment tools within the context of complex regulations and definitions to complete extensive technical documentation for case notes and claims.
- Demonstrated experience developing housing plans and matching clients with appropriate housing. Experience with housing searches, application completion, landlord-tenant negotiations, connecting households to housing legal aid, etc.
- Demonstrated experience assisting clients to find and keep employment through community collaboration and support.
- Demonstrated ability and experience in developing and maintaining effective working relationships with community-based organizations, community service providers, training institutions, employers, clients, and staff.
- Demonstrated ability to engage and motivate veteran clients from diverse backgrounds and recognize and overcome bias that hinders effective communication in order to secure information and support the client's ability to develop and attain personal goals.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively advocate for services on clients behalf, including mediation when other challenges are present.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team in order to facilitate comprehensive program solutions.
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to provide de-escalation and crisis support to clients.
