Cloud Engineer - Software, DevOps, Software Engineer
Washington, United States
Your ImpactAs a contributor in the APX platform engineering organization on the Cloud Net team, you focus on solving real‑time problems for mission‑critical cloud‑native services—and on the quality and reliability our customers expect. You'll work closely with teams operating Axon systems around the world, and your technical influence extends across engineering because every product needs sound guidance for how it connects and scales in Axon’s overall networking picture.
A typical week blends Kubernetes networking, service mesh (for example Istio and Envoy), ingress and gateways, TLS and certificate automation, DNS and public‑edge routing, and production incidents where fixing the issue means tracing HTTP, DNS, load balancing, and cloud edges end to end. In this role, you'll ship automation and reliable cloud‑based platforms (we have no data centers, so there is no rack‑and‑stack in this role).
Work Location: This role is based out of our Seattle office and follows a hybrid schedule. We rely on in‑person collaboration and ask that team members work onsite Tuesdays through Fridays, with the flexibility to work remotely on Mondays, unless there is an approved workplace accommodation. We believe that connection fuels innovation, and our in‑office culture is designed to foster meaningful teamwork, mentorship, and shared success
What You’ll Do- Work on a mixed infrastructure and software team that owns critical platform networking for Axon’s cloud systems: mesh and ingress, TLS and certificate automation, DNS and edge routing, and the automation that keeps those paths safe and observable.
- Advance Axon’s use of Istio‑style service mesh patterns that underpin how we scale—building features, hardening what runs in production, and improving how we roll out change.
- Act as a builder and operator: ship infrastructure‑as‑code and software‑backed controls, steward components that must meet strict regulatory expectations (including FedRAMP where applicable), and address vulnerabilities with timely, disciplined change.
- Advise software engineers through design reviews, ad‑hoc questions, and pair programming when connectivity, ingress, mesh, or TLS behavior is on the critical path.
- Automate operations so the platform stays highly available (targeting four‑nines‑class reliability for these components). Example: TLS certificate management and automation at scale—where small mistakes can become customer‑visible outages if left manual.
- Six or more years working on globally diverse, 24/7, high‑volume production systems.
- At least one strong track record from the following:
- Operating critical components or services in Kubernetes clusters at meaningful scale (ingress, gateways, mesh, or similar).
- Infrastructure‑as‑code and automated delivery on public cloud (Axon uses Azure; other major clouds are fine).
- Production software in Python, Go, or Java (including Scala) for infrastructure, tooling, or reliable services—not only one‑off scripts.
- Production ownership of service mesh, ingress, TLS/certificate automation, DNS or public‑edge patterns, or secure east‑west traffic in cloud environments.
- Excellent problem‑solving skills debugging cloud‑native distributed systems (HTTP/TLS, DNS, load balancing, Kubernetes networking).
- Familiarity with a Git Ops‑style approach to software and infrastructure delivery.
- Empathy for software engineers with widely varying depth in networking—meeting people where they are, without talking past them.
- Note: This role is centered on cloud‑native platform engineering and software‑backed automation. It is a weaker match if your experience is primarily traditional enterprise network operations (for example campus switching or appliance‑only administration) without substantial Kubernetes operations, software delivery, or infrastructure‑as‑code.
- Competitive salary and 401k with employer match
- Discretionary paid time off
- Paid parental leave for all
- Fitness Programs
- Emotional & Mental Wellness support
- Employee Resource Groups (ERGs)
- And yes, we have snacks in our offices
