Principal Engineer, AWS Builder Acceleration

Job  | Amazon Development Center U.S., Inc.

Are you passionate about leveraging GenAI and advanced AWS technologies to simplify the builder experience and accelerate innovations at AWS scale? We are building a new organization, AWS Builder Acceleration (AWSBA), focused on reducing toil and increasing building efficiency across AWS builders. Our mission is to accelerate AWS builder teams’ innovation by eliminating friction throughout the software development and operational lifecycle.

Through AI‑based automated solutions and centralized service management, we address fundamental challenges including KTLO service maintenance burden, launch readiness complexities, and recurring operational load. By collaborating with builder teams to identify emerging challenges, we shape our strategic roadmap to reinvent the development and operational ecosystem.

We are seeking an experienced principal engineer to lead AWSBA in simplifying and accelerating the software development experience for 20,000+ AWS engineers. Your role involves building services and tools that reduce friction, listening to internal customers, influencing the Amazon Software Builder Experience (ASBX) roadmap, and driving transformation across engineering teams. You will harness advanced technologies—including AI‑powered tooling, agentic workflows, and AWS solutions—to create next‑generation builder experiences at AWS scale.

About

You

You should have deep expertise in the architecture and business use of AWS technologies and recognize the transformative potential of generative AI in software development. You are technically hands‑on, passionate about developer experience, and driven to simplify the AWS developer experience. You have led or contributed to multiple simultaneous software development initiatives, balanced technical leadership with strong business judgment, and have a track record of delivering large‑scale, highly available, low‑latency, high‑quality systems.

  • Decompose complex builder problems into simple, scalable solutions.
  • Develop a strategic roadmap that delivers meaningful improvements weekly while working toward long‑term transformation.
  • Establish team culture and coach other SDEs to set new standards for the ideal software builder experience.
  • Partner closely with ASBX while focusing on AWS‑specific challenges.
  • Make and defend decisions about scope and priorities, even when facing pressure from senior stakeholders.
Unique Opportunities
  • Re‑imagine how developers build and operate the software that underpins the world’s largest cloud.
  • Shape a new organization from day one.
  • Drive significant transformation across AWS engineering.
  • Pioneer the use of cutting‑edge generative AI technologies to create the next generation of builder experiences.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.

  • 8+ years of leading design or architecture of new and existing systems.
  • Proven track record of leading the delivery of large‑scale, highly available, low‑latency, high‑quality systems.
  • Experience in a technical leadership role within a large organization.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Deep hands‑on experience building software at AWS.
  • Experience with software tooling and services supporting the development lifecycle at scale.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work with senior leaders across organizations to develop and champion long‑term technical strategy.
  • Experience building large‑scale AI solutions.
