Software Dev Engineer II, EBS Placement

Amazon Development Center, U.S., Inc. is looking for talented engineers to join the EBS Placement team. The team builds systems that optimally distribute EBS volumes across AWS’s global infrastructure, directly impacting millions of customers by improving performance, availability, durability, and cost-efficiency.

• Design, write, and maintain code for the placement decision engine, supporting new storage features, server capabilities, and optimization functions.
• Dive into data to drive design decisions and measure the effectiveness of enhancements.
• Reason through a wide range of decision factors, such as infrastructure variability, workload patterns, competing optimization objectives, replica diversification, and data staleness.
• Debug complex distributed systems issues, requiring detailed analysis and creative solutions.
• Review proposals and code from peer teams and partner groups.

In addition, you may provide consultation to partner teams on product rollout planning, migration strategies, capacity planning, fast mitigation of customer impact, and root-causing performance degradations.

About the team – the EBS Placement team consists of strong engineers who design and deploy sophisticated algorithms that make real‑time placement decisions while balancing dozens of optimization objectives. You will collaborate closely with principal engineers and scientists, influence more than five teams across the organization, and help maintain operational excellence for mission‑critical services.

• 3+ years of professional software development experience (non‑internship).
• 2+ years of design or architecture experience for new and existing systems, including reliability and scaling principles.
• Experience programming in at least one software programming language.

• 3+ years of full software development life cycle experience, covering coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations.
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science or an equivalent field.
• Experience using AI‑assisted development tools (e.g., Kiro, Cursor, Claude Code, Git Hub Copilot) to accelerate data analysis, software design, implementation, review, and investigation.

The base salary range for this position is:
USA, WA, Seattle –  -  USD per year
