Overview
Join the team that powers one of AWS's most critical services - Elastic Block Store (EBS)! The EBS Placement team builds systems that optimize how millions of storage volumes are distributed across AWS's vast infrastructure. Our work directly impacts every EBS customer, from startups to the world's largest enterprises, who rely on us to serve exabytes of data and trillions of I/Os daily.
The position involves designing and maintaining distributed systems that make real-time placement decisions for customer data, balancing performance, availability, durability, and cost. Engineers will work on challenges such as optimizing storage density, improving I/O performance, and ensuring data durability in the face of multiple failure modes. The role offers opportunities to develop predictive performance guarantees, intelligent resource modeling, simulation systems, and next‑generation placement algorithms.
Responsibilities- Design and write code to update the placement decision engine for new storage features, server capabilities, and optimization functions.
- Analyze data to inform design decisions and evaluate the effectiveness of changes.
- Reason about optimization trade‑offs across a range of factors such as infrastructure variability, customer workload patterns, and placement of data replicas.
- Debug complex distributed systems issues that require careful analysis and creative problem‑solving.
- Review proposals and code from peers and partner teams.
- Consult with partner teams on product rollouts, capacity planning, rapid mitigation of customer impact, and root‑cause analysis of performance degradations.
- 3+ years of professional software development experience.
- 2+ years of design or architecture experience for new or existing systems.
- Experience programming in at least one software language.
- 3+ years of full software development life cycle experience, including coding standards, code reviews, source control, build processes, testing, and operations.
