Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE), Healthcare - Seattle

Deploying AI models and agentic systems into real healthcare workflows with strong emphasis on AI evaluation, safety, and production readiness.

About the Role

Forward Deployed Engineer (Healthcare) at OpenAI to lead end-to-end deployment of AI models and agentic systems into healthcare organizations, translating clinical and operational workflows into production solutions while ensuring security, compliance, and measurable impact. Role is Seattle-based, hybrid (3 days in office) with up to 50% travel and relocation assistance.

Job Description Role

OpenAI is hiring a Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) for healthcare to own end-to-end deployments of AI models and agentic systems at payers, providers, health systems, and healthcare technology companies. The FDE translates complex customer workflows, data, infrastructure, and regulatory constraints into production AI systems and focuses on measurable adoption and workflow impact.

Key Responsibilities
  • Own technical solution lifecycle from discovery, scoping, architecture, hands‑on implementation, evaluation, production deployment, adoption, and handoff.
  • Partner with customer engineers, operators, and domain experts to frame ambiguous problems and translate workflows into technical requirements and measurable outcomes.
  • Design and implement production AI applications and agentic systems that integrate with customer infrastructure, enterprise APIs, data platforms, EHRs, claims systems, and operational tools.
  • Build safeguards for protected health information (PHI) and ensure HIPAA, privacy, security, authorization, governance, auditability, and other regulated-delivery requirements are met.
  • Define and operationalize evaluations, validation evidence, human‑review workflows, escalation paths, and launch criteria tailored to customer acceptance thresholds.
  • Use evaluation results, error analysis, observability, and customer feedback to improve system reliability, performance, model selection, and production readiness.
  • Distill deployment learnings into reference architectures, interoperability and integration patterns, evaluation harnesses, security controls, and reusable technical primitives.
Requirements
  • Typically 6+ years of experience in software engineering, ML/AI engineering, solutions engineering, technical consulting, or comparable roles with technical depth.
  • Experience acting as a senior engineer, tech lead, or deployment owner trusted to make technical decisions in ambiguous environments.
  • Hands‑on ownership of technical discovery, architecture, implementation, evaluation, productionization, and handoff for complex customer‑facing or enterprise systems.
  • Healthcare domain experience preferred: payer workflows, provider operations, EHR systems, or interoperability standards such as Epic, HL7, and FHIR.
  • Familiarity with provider or health‑system workflows (clinical operations, revenue cycle management, patient access, contact centers) and EHR/interoperability technologies (Epic, Oracle Health/Cerner, MEDITECH, HL7, FHIR) is desirable.
  • Strong judgment in AI evaluation, privacy, security, governance, and reliability.
Location & Travel
  • Role is based in Seattle. Hybrid work model: 3 days in the office per week.
  • Relocation assistance is offered. Travel up to 50% is required.
  • Work closely with customer technical and operational teams and internal Business, Research, Product, Engineering, and Security partners to deliver solutions and translate deployment learnings into product improvements.
