Position Details

This is a temporary, non-benefited position, created to support the specialized recreation programs due to a long-term leave of absence. The employee will be responsible for the supervision of specialized recreation programs and program planning, and training, scheduling, and supervision of other program staff and volunteers. Work is performed indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions. Must be able to work days, evenings, weekends, and/or occasional holidays as needed.

Hours will vary and are anticipated to be 20-30 hours per week, depending on programs and sports seasons.

Primary Duties
  • Lead recreation staff working with children, teens, adults, and seniors, with developmental disabilities in the Specialized Recreation Programs.
  • Plan programs for Specialized Recreation participants. Create activity plans, schedules, games, crafts, or other program components.
  • Prepare activity materials for program staff including timelines, instructions, supplies, and other relevant information.
  • Work with Recreation Coordinators to plan and facilitate inclusive programming for preschool and youth participants.
  • Develop and implement marketing plan for community partners and program participants.
  • Safely work with participants with varying abilities in a variety of activities and settings, including social programs, cooking, games, sports, classes, fitness, health and wellness, movement, enrichment, field trips, arts and crafts, community exploration, music, dance, and other duties as assigned.
  • Safely plan and lead field trips, social programs, arts and crafts, games, coach sports, and provide overall leadership to Specialized Recreation Programs, including transportation of program participants.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication skills using tact, patience, and courtesy with supervisor, employees, participants, families, customers, and the general public.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • Must have at least two (2) years of experience working with individuals with disabilities.
  • Must have at least one (1) year of program planning experience.
  • Must have a driver's license without impending loss and maintain valid license while employed.
  • Must pass a background check, including a driving abstract review, before an offer from the City will be extended.
  • Must pass a separate background check for the Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS).

This role may be required to be fingerprinted for a DHHS background check, as determined by the State. First Aid & CPR certification is required; training will be provided by the City.
