Captain (Transportation) About Argosy Cruises

For more than 75 years, Argosy Cruises has been woven into the fabric of the Pacific Northwest. What began as the Spring Street Water Taxi evolved into Seattle Harbor Tours and today stands as Argosy Cruises, the region’s premier family‑owned and Seattle‑operated cruise company.

We are known for iconic experiences such as Seattle’s Original Harbor Cruise and the Ballard Locks Cruise, as well as unforgettable private events, corporate charters, and beloved community traditions including the annual Christmas Ship Festival and other seasonal celebrations.

When guests step aboard an Argosy vessel, they are not just taking a ride. They are experiencing Seattle from the water, guided by professionals who take pride in safety, seamanship, and storytelling.

About the Role

As a Captain at Argosy Cruises, you are the leader of the vessel and responsible for safe navigation, exceptional guest experiences, and the performance and development of your crew. You will operate and maneuver vessels in dynamic environments, maintain strict safety standards, and communicate confidently with guests, crew, management, and the United States Coast Guard.

This role is ideal for an experienced USCG‑licensed Captain who enjoys hands‑on vessel operations, mentoring crew, solving problems in real time, and representing a respected Northwest brand on the water.

Key Responsibilities
  • Safely and confidently operate Argosy vessels while leading crew and delivering memorable guest experiences.
  • Navigate and operate vessels using radar, depth finders, radios, buoys, lights, and other navigational aids.
  • Dock and undock vessels, including maneuvering through tight spaces such as Locks.
  • Adjust navigation plans based on weather, traffic, and water conditions.
  • Monitor gauges and vessel systems to ensure safe operating levels.
  • Direct crew and deckhands during operations, including line handling, ramps and gates, fueling, pump‑outs, deck rounds, emergency procedures, stocking, and event execution.
  • Deliver safety briefings, closing announcements, and engaging narration over the PA system.
  • Serve as Leader on Duty when scheduled.
  • Maintain all required vessel logbooks and records.
  • Report passenger counts to the United States Coast Guard within required time frames.
  • Communicate directly with company leadership and the United States Coast Guard during emergencies.
  • Identify, report, and assist with resolving mechanical and maintenance issues alongside the Engineering team.
  • Perform and support preventative maintenance tasks.
  • Lead and administer regular emergency drills in compliance with Coast Guard requirements.
  • Coach, train, and provide performance feedback to crew members.
  • Assist with hiring and onboarding new crew.
  • Support onboard POS systems, including troubleshooting and transaction processing.
  • Follow all accident and injury reporting procedures.
  • Assist ADA guests in accordance with Argosy safety protocols.
