Position: Truck Driver 3 Full-Time / Non-Permanent

Overview

Schedule: 40 hrs./week, Monday-Friday, 7am-3:30pm

Travel Requirements: This position travels daily throughout Western Washington State and on occasion over the Cascades to Yakima and Wenatchee.

What you will be doing

The Surplus Operations’ primary responsibilities are to keep State and Federal surplus property out of the landfills (reutilizing property wherever possible) and to maximize the dollars that are returned to agencies. Under the direction of the Equipment Operator Supervisor, this position is responsible to safely operate a semi-tractor trailer combination vehicle rated at 80,000 Gross Combined Weight (GCW) to transport standard surplus items that our customers wish for us to pick up from their location in the form of pallets and/or loose items that consist of furniture, electronics and equipment from state agencies and the states poly-subs.

This position is not solely a driving role; as a Truck Driver 3, you will be loading and unloading the truck as well, using dollies and other equipment.

Who we are

The Department of Enterprise Services (DES) provides centralized business services to state government agencies; to other public entities such as cities, counties and tribes; and to Washington residents. The majority of work involves getting in and out of vehicles of varying sizes, with deliveries to multiple locations within tight timelines.

You will encounter traffic delays, mechanical problems and breakdowns, inclement weather, and the physical demands of loading and unloading heavy items. Some work occurs in a non-climate controlled warehouse and you may be exposed to excessive dust. You must be willing and able to sit and/or stand for prolonged periods in noisy conditions without loss of concentration. You will have frequent contact with internal and external customers;

interpersonal skills are required. All communication should be done with a positive attitude and in a professional manner. You must be able to answer questions about services and provide accurate information and defuse customer concerns.

Responsibilities
  • Surplus Loading/Unloading and Deliveries
    • Driving a semi-tractor trailer combination, primarily a van trailer (training available to operate a car hauler, straight deck and lowboy trailers as needed) in a safe manner around the state for the purposes of picking up and delivering surplus equipment from state agencies and our poly-subs
    • Perform pre-trip daily inspections
    • Operate and maintain forklift and pallet jacks according to policy, regulations, and recognized standards
    • Maintain current forklift operator’s card
    • Use hand dollies, wheel dollies, pallet jacks (walk-behind and riding), and forklift trucks to load and unload surplus into and out of trailers
    • Evaluate and schedule weekly with customers based on current open documents in SRMS
  • Scheduling and routing for daily pickups and deliveries
    • Use systematic methods for routing to accomplish the most efficient plan/route for pickups and deliveries of surplus items within the 30 business day metrics for Surplus Operations
  • Customer Service
    • Show a sincere interest in customers and their needs
    • Work with the receiving team to understand their role and ways to help them
Work Setting

Tools and Equipment
