Summary
Metro Transit's Vehicle Maintenance division is seeking to fill multiple Special Duty Assignment vacancies for the role of Lead Service Worker (Lead ESW). The position is open to current Transit Equipment Service Workers who have accrued at least two years of service in the classification at the time of application closing.
Responsibilities- Assign work to Equipment Service Workers in accordance with policy and procedures, ensuring all equipment service needs and requests are fulfilled and bus defects are reported.
- Coordinate, direct, instruct and assist Equipment Service Workers and Utility Service Workers, ensuring timely completion of work and equipment in proper working order.
- Train new and existing personnel on required aspects of service, equipment function, basic repair and safety procedures, and inform workers of new servicing requirements.
- Inform service workers of all safety and alarm systems related to their work; immediately report any safety violations or alarms.
- Advise employees when their performance is unsatisfactory and/or violates policy; provide feedback and recommend corrective actions to higher‑level staff.
- Monitor information in automated systems regarding employee performance, commodities ordered, and equipment service cycles.
- Ensure shop and revenue‑collection equipment is maintained appropriately and report defects, following up on required repairs.
- Use standard computer applications to produce and share documents.
- Perform other related tasks as assigned.
- Current Metro Transit Equipment Service Worker with a minimum of two years of service experience in the classification as of the closing date.
- Ability to communicate and follow written and oral instructions.
- Proficiency in basic numeric record keeping and independent work without supervision.
- Ability to train and direct Equipment Service Workers and Utility Service Workers, providing clear corrective feedback.
- Ability to inspect equipment and determine servicing needs.
- Knowledge of oiling, greasing, and general lubrication techniques.
- Knowledge of coach sign‑out/assignment procedures.
- Attention to detail, high organization, and initiative to solve problems.
- Proficiency in managing competing priorities and planning/scheduling workgroup efforts.
- Problem‑solving and critical‑thinking skills for independent decision‑making.
- Ability to perform basic operations in MS Outlook, Word, and Excel.
- Respect and fairness in working with a diverse workforce.
- Good listening skills and the ability to give and receive feedback productively.
- Approachability and skill in building relationships and trust with employees.
- Ability to deescalate and resolve conflicts fairly and equitably.

- Lead or supervisory experience.
- Experience with the M5 System.
- Skill in navigating and applying contract/CBA language.
- Skill in planning and scheduling, especially for preventative and emergent maintenance of fleet vehicles.
Special Requirements
- Possession of a valid Class B CDL with passenger endorsement and an acceptable driving record.
- A valid Washington State Driver License and acceptable driving record.
- Compliance with drug and alcohol testing for safety‑sensitive positions as required by federal regulations.
- Willingness to work any shift or location assigned.
- Willingness to accept consecutive regular days off that are assigned.
- Perform a range of physical skills associated with automotive service and maintenance, including standing, bending, crouching, kneeling, crawling, reaching, twisting, and operation of foot controls while driving.
- Push, pull, bend and crouch while loading and unloading fare boxes, and lift up to 50 pounds.
