Join Metro Link Light Rail Operations Team – A Career That Takes You Places.

King County Metro is seeking motivated individuals to join our Link Light Rail team through the Rail Supervisor-in-Training (RSIT) program.

This paid, one (1) year (12 month) training program combines classroom learning with on-the-job instruction throughout Rail Operations. You'll build the skills necessary to supervise and ensure safe, reliable, and equitable transit operations for thousands of riders each day.

Position Overview

RSITs will be subject to a one (1) year probationary period. All RSITs must obtain (or maintain) a valid Rail Operator Card.

Compensation
  • First 6 months: $49.96/hour
  • Second 6 months: $52.90/hour
  • After probation:
    Promote to Rail Supervisor starting at $52.90/hour, moving in four steps to $58.78/hour over two years.

Responsibilities
  • Field Supervision:
    Oversee rail operations in the field, interface with Rail Operators, respond to incidents, and ensure safe and on-time delivery.
  • Communications Specialist:
    Manage communications for the Link Control Center, monitor emergency systems, and ensure accurate train positioning and passenger information.
  • Base Planning & Dispatching:
    Manage Rail Operator assignments, work schedules, and service coverage.
  • Yard Supervision:
    Authorize work and movements in the yard.
  • Other duties include troubleshooting LRV, coordinating with agencies, investigating incidents, documenting incidents, providing customer service, managing assignments, maintaining electronic reports, coordinating with vehicle maintenance, authorizing train movements, managing yard communications, and ensuring safety.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Transit/Rail Operator

    Experience:

    Minimum 2½ years of full-time transit or rail operator experience within the last five years.
  • Operations Knowledge:
    Ability to interpret schedules, SOPs, and rulebooks.
  • Rules and Safety:
    Experience applying operating rules and safety regulations.
  • Radio Communication:
    Minimum 1 year of two‑way radio experience in an operational or dispatch environment.
  • Communication

    Skills:

    Clear written correspondence and verbal communication.
  • Technology

    Skills:

    Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Teams, SharePoint, Outlook, and specialized operational software.
  • Problem‑Solving and Organization:
    Identifying operational problems and developing solutions.
  • Performance Feedback:
    Experience providing actionable performance feedback.
  • Equity and Diversity:
    Understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion principles.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Experience or coursework in supervision.
  • Skill in developing and evaluating training materials.
  • Experience diagnosing rail vehicle mechanical/electrical failures.
  • Experience with operations control or incident management center.
  • Experience with workforce management software (e.g., HASTUS).
  • Familiarity with SCADA systems.
Necessary

Special Requirements
  • Valid driver’s license with no suspensions or revocations in the past 36 months and no more than 1 moving violation in the past 12 months.
  • Ability to pass DOT physical exam and pre‑employment drug testing.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Link Rail Operator Card.
Physical Requirements
  • Sit, stand, and walk for extended periods (up to 6 hours).
  • Navigate loose or uneven terrain.
  • Scale a 3‑foot elevation without assistance.
  • Climb 4 flights of stairs without stopping.
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds across short distances.
