Highlands County BCC invites applications for the Custodian position.

Pay Grade/Salary Range: PG-101 $ 31,512.00 - $50,419.20 ($15.15 - $24.24 hourly)

A laborer responsible for moderately heavy and detailed housekeeping and light maintenance tasks for county buildings and property.

• Scrub, mop, wax, and polish exposed floors
• Vacuum, clean, and sweep carpeted areas
• Dust and polish furniture
• Wash windows, woodwork, paneling, toilets, wash basins, and other fixtures
• Restock paper and liquid products in bathrooms, kitchens, and other designated areas
• Change towels, toilet paper, and soap in washrooms or other work areas
• Sweep and generally clean sidewalks and other outside areas near buildings
• Remove trash and other obstructions from buildings, sidewalks, driveways, and parking areas
• Replace burned‑out light bulbs
• Assist in making minor repairs to buildings and equipment
• Move office furniture and equipment to new locations as needed
• Operate motor vehicles to transport materials and personnel
• Maintain a professional and safe unit and work area adhering to established safety policies and the image desired for the organization
• Follow consistently the Board policies and procedures
• Respond productively to change and perform other related tasks as required and as directed

• Knowledge of materials, methods, and equipment required in janitorial work
• Skill in the operation of hand tools, buffers, vacuums, pressure cleaning duties and other mechanical equipment
• Ability to understand and communicate oral and written instructions
• Ability to function efficiently without supervision
• Sufficient agility to safely perform a variety of custodial tasks
• Ability to maintain effective working relationships with co‑workers, supervisors, managers, directors, elected officials, vendors, and the general public

Must be able to remain in a stationary position for 10% of the time. Frequently operates various types of janitorial equipment. Must be able to frequently position self to work under or around various items, frequently ascends/descends stairs, ladders and scaffolding, frequently moves materials and office equipment weighing up to 40 lbs, frequently communicates with the public, vendors, and co‑workers, frequently works in outdoor weather conditions, may be required to work in inclement outdoor weather conditions for up to four hours, frequently operates motor vehicle for up to four hours.

• A minimum of two (2) years of experience in commercial custodial work.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License.
• Disaster Essential.
